The Police and other services have been banned from buying BMW cars. Apparently they had issues with the 3 litre diesels which had caused some vehicle fires. The issue related to the specific way the Police used the vehicles - they might have left the vehicle on tickover for an hour or so whilst at the side of the road attending to an accident, with all the lights etc on. Immediately after that, they may have raced off at high speed to attend another problem and it was in these circumstances that issues could arise. BMW Park Lane have closed the department which dealt with the supply of vehicles to the various services.
Now you have to look out for a Volvo in your rear mirror instead on an X5 or 5 series.

I've been seeing quite a few Traffic XC90's and V90's recently. I just put it down to the regular changes of manufacturer they go through, but obviously more to it than that!

I got a recall for the 430 earlier last year due to the possibility of an EGR related fire. The car was checked and ok but just before Christmas I got another recall letter for the same thing so presumably plods troubles has highlighted the issue for BMW.

The engine issue came out after a traffic officer was killed when his engine caught fire. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-64283859Pretty terrible that it took a death to happen before action was taken. Call me a cynic, but maybe too many "freebies" / cheap lease deals to decision makers to walk away from maybe (allegedly of course)? At the risk of going off on one again about a pet subject of mine, it has always pissed me off mightily that the police (and NHS, fire service, MOD, government departments etc) buy foreign made vehicles. As much of our tax as possible should stay in the UK.

When I was a boy it was all Jags and Fords. When I think back to police cars, the ones that stand out were the SD1 and MK 3 Granada, probably because my dad had both as company cars in the late 80s. I agree with PG, but unfortunately it's more and more difficult to buy British.

BMW also invest a large amount in the UK, Mini and Rolls Royce.

There has been a long running topic on Pistonheads about this. The cars are all being auctioned off with the engines disabled by the blocks being drilled.

Put them all in Qashqais then… Good idea, the rear doors open 85 degrees, making getting arrestees in and out easier.
