I've always carried a wallet with the cards I use regularly and my driving license and obviously some cash. With pockets in trousers getting smaller and my refusal to carry a man bag just to go to the pub, I have experimented with one of those phone wallets. The problem is, they are so bulky so I gave up and went back to leather wallet and normal phone case. I saw this advertised on Facebook (yes, I know, I'm not usually that much of a sucker) but I was intrigued. www.ridgewallet.comI have tried a money clip, but it keeps falling off and snagging in my pocket and the notes get torn. This isn't cheap, but I thought a minor extravagance once in a while won't hurt. Should be arriving today.

The trouble is no matter how clever they make these wallets, how small, how seemingly well sorted out, you can't do anything about the size of the credit cards that go in them and once you get a few you end up with this lump in your pocket no matter. Then you have your phone and like you there's no way I'd be seen dead with any sort of "man bag" - they're fine for homosexuals and the European metrosexual types with polo neck jumpers and steel rimmed spectacles - but not for me. I ended up getting as slim a phone wallet as possible and just sticking a couple of cards in for general use.

I have a normal wallet from Aspinal of London (a fathers day present from the eldest), yes it gets bulky at times but only because of receipts and general crap that I fill it with; I have a clearout every so often.
I'm afraid to say that I have a "man bag", generally I only use it for work and if I need to pick up a few things from town though, normally the wallet either goes in my back pocket or the wifes bag, if we have to travel light I leave the wallet at home and take just a card with me, I'm not really a cash man.
As for the phone wallet things, I'm not that keen; if I were to lose my phone (unlikely as I have never done so in the past but there is always a first time) I have then lost my cards, plus I like my phone as thin as possible so only have slim cover on it, I don't like the look of the flip cover ones either.

Where do I start? I've got an Ogon aluminium card holder I liked the look of: www.cardholdershop.co.uk/ogon-card-case-red?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkdK82d2X1QIVhTLTCh031AaJEAkYBCABEgIaG_D_BwEI stopped using it when I saw the i-clip advertised: i-clip.co.uk and got given one for my birthday after adding it to a wish list. For contactless they're largely made redundant by Apple Wallet so I go out at lunchtime with only my iPhone on me. Of course one thing you also will need is a change wallet for coins. I have a nice old fold over one of those. I also have a man-bag but I only use it when we go on holiday: no way i'd be seen with it in the UK!

I've switched to stuffing notes and card into my Iphone plus cover and leave the rest of the bulky items sat in my wallet that sits in my briefcase. I've become a bit cashless now that contactless is so convenient. I could probably ditch the card altogether if I had a little more faith in the security of applepay.

Topical thread. I kept thinking about changing my wallet, but can never find anything that fits all the needs. Minimal bulk, yet loads of room seems to be a hard compromise. Cards + cash can be dealt with. But it's all the other stuff I end up with - business cards (mine and others - which are often not the same size as credit cards, although more are I see now), credit card receipts, notes etc I've nearly bought a Bellroy a few times, but never gone through with it. Bellroy walletsI might look at the Ridge - be interested to hear how you get on with it.

I've started using Apple Pay for my debit card so don't need my wallet for popping to the shops, just take the phone. The work credit card doesn't work on Apple Pay though so I have to take my wallet. Trouble I have is just how fat it gets as I head towards the end of the month with all my expenses receipts. The Barclaycard statement comes out on the 24th of each month so it's pretty hefty at the moment and I prefer not to store the receipts elsewhere as I'll only lose them!

I-Clip is pretty much the same idea: I used my shell card to avoid any id theft and the mouse gives you an idea of size.

I swapped away from using an old-fashioned wallet when living in Russia – the fact that it was something of a cash economy, and paper notes over there start from 10 roubles, meant that you inevitably had far too big a wad of notes to fit into a wallet. So I swapped to a slim card-holder for my cards and a money clip for the notes, and have kept to that habit ever since. I keep my oyster card and my office pass in my money clip and the notes in between them, which gets around the risk of notes getting torn. My current cardholder is a smart orange leather one and the clip is a simple sterling silver one shaped like a large paperclip.

So that's what a £20 note looks like...

I've got a Bellroy note sleeve, which is great, fits all my cards in and is still really slim. Nicely made too. Helps that I have lost cards on my iPhone and like BB, I don't always carry my wallet as I use Apple Pay.

It's been suggested by a few colleagues but their please have fallen on deaf ears thus far. Even if your company won't invest in an online expenses system, there is now no legal need to keep original receipts. For expense claims, HMRC accept that scans are acceptable. So your company should follow that. All you have to do then is scan your receipts as a pdf file (using an iphone or android scanner app) and get one that you can add more pages to a pre-existing scan. So get a receipt, scan it, throw it away. Simples.

Even when I pay by phone for parking at the station they insist I download and print off VAT receipts. This despite our SHEQ manager activily starting a war against excess paper usage!

You do always need a VAT receipt to recover the VAT. But they are way behind to insist you print it out......
