Per the article - The Volkswagen Golf is tipped to continue into a ninth generation with electric power, in line with the firm's plan to retain historically significant nameplates.
Volkswagen boss Thomas Schafer said the firm would not be retiring the Golf name, and instead the model could become part of the ID line-up of electric vehicles. The current, eighth-generation VW Golf is due to retire around 2027-2028.
The ID naming convention is here to stay, said Schafer, as it was already well known by buyers and is associated with electric VWs.
He pointed to the example of the Volkswagen ID Buzz already carrying a name, and that ID models didn’t always need to have a number after them (eg ID 3, ID 4 etc). To that end, VW “might have ID Golf”.
He added: “We would not let go of the Golf name, no way.”I always wondered at the logic of VW (and others) creating new nomenclatures for EV, as once they were mainstream, what about the names people know? A potential customer might well think "If I can't buy a Golf any more, then I may as well look at other brands". So now, the ID Golf will appear. Unless it's rear wheel drive like the ID3, surely that will just leave VW with multiple platforms? Sounds to me like the global acceptance of the ID range as "proper VW's" has not been good enough and they are now going to have to think again. The motoring press certainly have not swooned over the ID range.

I think they are right that people know about the ID brand but do they actually care about it? If I suggest to you I've bought something called ID you could probably imagine one of any number of products or services, but if I say I've bought a Golf you know instantly what I'm talking about. It takes a long time to build a brand but it only works if customers buy into it and understand it. I've not a clue where they got the ID brand name from or what it stands for (happy to be enlightened but my point is that if it takes a bunch of car geeks on a forum to point it out then the VW marketing team haven't been very successful).

VW has spent 50 years building Golf into a billion dollar brand. They’re not going to abandon it now.

Its still a great opportunity for brands that have struggled over the last few years and trying to challenge in the competitive sectors.
The new Megane is another example where it kicks ten bells out of the ID3. Without a recognisable name like Golf you'd take the Renault every day.

VW has spent 50 years building Golf into a billion dollar brand. They’re not going to abandon it now. I wonder how much they spent creating ID as a brand. It seemed fairly pointless from the start unless they were going to retire the Golf, etc once they'd shifted across to electric only.

After the Dieselgate scandal, maybe the powers that be wanted another 2-letter acronym for their brand rather than VW? Maybe the plan is to drop VW and replace it with ID. There may also be another reason to change brand name, that of "Volkswagen", or "PeoplesCar" in its native language. Imagine in years gone by if you were British, would you prefer to say "I drive a PeoplesCar Cortina" or "I drive a Ford Cortina" ?? The idea of a brand name may have something to do with the change....
