This is to replace my mother's car, not mine. At the moment she has a 65-reg C200 petrol AMG Line with Premium Pack and a few other extras. About 45,000 miles, full dealer history and close to mint condition. But she fancies a change, so I had a look around. There is almost nothing available at the moment. From a spec list of no bigger and preferably a bit smaller than the C-Class, petrol or petrol hybrid, auto, with heated leather seats, parking sensors and a sunroof, up to about £25,000 there is very little to choose from. I found a handful of BMWs (mostly 225 xe Active Tourers or 118i 5-door), no Mercedes, one Audi A3, two Lexus UX (stretching the budget a bit) and two MINI Clubmans, although only one has the essential HUD. And that is it. Across the whole UK.
I think she might just be better off keeping the Benz.
ETA, absolutely no Volvos or VWs, either. Nothing.

I think I'd wait for something like the right XC40 to appear. Never driven one, but the X2 does get criticised for having a hard ride.

I've been keeping my eyes on the secondhand / used car market, primarily in terms of disposing of the Polo, and it's definitely not settled down post-pandemic yet. I was toying with the idea of swapping the Polo for something more interesting at the same price (but still cheap to tax and insure whilst not being too much older) but the way things are going I now feel tempted to try to hold onto it for another year-and-a-bit

I've been looking at 370Zs again and the price of them has come back down a bit after a spike

It is a very odd market at all ends of the spectrum.I had a chat with 2 Porsche dealers ,not looking for stock of 911s especially not gt products ,one said they had sold one 911 in the past month or so and that sales had fallen off a cliff (well maybe charging 30k overs on gts cars might have something to do with that) and the stocklists I keep getting from the likes of top555 show the same stock as 8 months ago.

My well of sympathy for Porsche dealers is extremely shallow.

Not surprised they've only sold one 911, it's long since not been their core product and with restrictions on manufacturing caused by the chip shortage I suspect they're prioritising building Macans Cayness and Taycans.
Regarding the OP. The 65 plate Merc is probably worth as much as it ever will be due to high used car prices but so is everything else she might want to replace it. Best advise is probably just to wait it out until something she actually wants comes along as a replacement.

Well thats interesting. Only a few months ago they'd have bitten your arm off for anything half decent. I guess the dealers have to wash out their massively overpriced stock before taking on more. Its difficult as punters still think they're cars are worth way over book. Maybe by spring next year stuff will be sensibly priced.

I have watched a couple of 911s in auctions and they fetched about £10K less than they would have done this time last year. Dealers are also knocking £1K/£2K off the prices of their used stuff but given the auction prices I saw, they are going to have to take a lot more than that off to generate real interest. Many dealers are still trying to get £80K for a 7 year old car when a couple of years ago it would have been £20K + cheaper. One to 2 year old 4 litre GTS Boxsters are mostly close to £80K which is near new pricing: they are almost certain to be sub £70K before too much time has passed.

I remember reading something the other day about how people are hanging on to their cars for a lot longer - something I've done myself - coming up to 13 years for the Scirocco when I used to change every three years - unless you have a burning desire to drive the very latest, with improvements and changes to styling getting ever more incremental there's becoming no reason to change. And I suspect much of the nearly new stuff was from hire fleets and the company car market (lease, contract hire etc etc) - I'm out of touch these days, but with a lot less travelling over the last couple of years, has there been less demand for company cars, and/or is that market thinking the same as me, that there's simply no need to change so regularly now?

Most of our clients have stopped providing company cars although there has been a bit of a resurgence with the tax benefits of EV's and long range hybrids. However the large fleets of Mondeos, Escorts etc have long gone.

A decision has been made to keep the Benz for the time being, which I am sure is the right thing to do.

There’s a slightly used 3 litre Volkswagen Touareg up for sale at a staggering £95000 and that’s not a misprint .

My mum is the sort to change her car when the old one is knackered (in her mind ie one breakdown and that's it), and then buy new. It shows how cars have come on , her 1.4 Merit Astra (optional seat height and clock!) 89-03 was shagged at 14years old and worth £50 trade in at only 60k Her replacement 1.4 Golf match 2003 to date is still going strong, although she commented the mileage is getting high at 75k. Nearing 80, I'm hoping it will see her out, providing she can do the gears and doesn't need an auto, and a new car would be a significant investment. And our 17 plate Yeti is feeling fresh as new at 5years 44k,I'd previously swap every 3 years, but there is nothing with a want factor, so why change?

There’s a slightly used 3 litre Volkswagen Touareg up for sale at a staggering £95000 and that’s not a misprint . Given the country's wealthy earn £125,140 and upwards, I can't see many of them wanting to part with about 16months of net income after tax, to buy a Touareg. In fact I think that nearly all cars at that kind of price point are going to move out the dealers very slowly over the next few years. Prior to the reduction in the banding for the additional rate from £150,000 there were only 660,000 people in the whole UK paying the additional rate of tax - not a huge amount of people to support all these cars being sold at £70K/£80K plus
