I have to attend a meeting re the possible sale of a company on Monday morning, in the Ramside Hall Hotel in Durham. Early start, loud music and cruise control and I'll see what I can squeeze out of it (mpg wise) on the way down. On the way back it will be in Sport for some more entertaining activity.
I am also taking a couple of days off from tonight to go to St Andrews now that the outlaws have bought a new static caravan - it's much cheaper (free) than staying at the Old Course and still very luxurious. I did try the Old Course but they no longer understand the word discount since they had their 3 month refurb. I'm not paying £300 a night!

I don't know if you've been before, but the golf courses get good reviews. The food in the Rib Room is excellent too - we went for my birthday last year and the did me the nicest steak I can remember in a very long time.

I wish I had the time to stay for golf. However on the off chance that the talks go well, I might just put my bag in the boot!

My favourite location up there is the Queens Hotel in Dundee - not too far from St Andrews so long as the bridge is open.
I keep meaning to try to get back up to Dundee and Aberdeen; got to be a good few years since I was last there - wonder what happened to the Turkish restaurant almost opposite The Queens - Anatolia's or something like that. Last time I checked it appeared to have shut rather than relocated

I went for a job interview at the Old Course Hotel about 3 years ago and they don't appear to understand the words treating your staff well either. It was made clear I'd be paid a 35 hour week but expected to work at least 40 with extra required at various times. No chance!
They're owned by the US firm Kohler (who make toilet ware) and the same firm owns the Hamilton Grand building - the red one on the corner opposite the 18th green - and the Duke's Course.

In my day, that was Hamilton Hall, one of the student halls of residence.
Staff in the Old Course were always exceptionally snotty.

Kohler converted it into luxury flats with a bar & grill at the bottom. If you're feeling flush the penthouse flat is still for sale for about £7M.

"Luxury" really is one of life's more terrible words!

Exclusive might be a better bet, especially at those prices!!
Do you remember Ma Bells, along The Scores? There are a couple of townhouses right next to it that are being renovated and converted into flats. They're going for a minimum of £1.3M for a 2 bed.

It was always known as "Yah Bells", because of the type of student it was best known for attracting. If it hasn't changed much, then I wouldn't want a flat next to it!
I dread to think how much the flat I lived in is now worth. It was 17 The Links, just the other side of Grannie Clark's Wynd from the Rusacks Hotel car-park, with views out of the front over the 1st and 18th fairways and up West Sands. My recollection is that in we paid £50 per week each with three of us in the flat. So that's about £650/month for the whole flat.

To the best of my knowledge it's still known as 'Ya Bells' I was in there on a Saturday night about a month ago and there were 6 people plus the barman! Mind you it's probably still mobbed when the students are in town. Your flat would be worth crazy money. Rusacks wanted to build an additional 100+ rooms on their car park site last year but I think it got turned down.

St Andrews is a funny sort of place. I remember staying on for a day or two after the end of term once, possibly at Easter time, and the change from one day to the next was not unlike entering a parallel universe. At the time I lived opposite the Central on Market St, and where normally the centre of St Andrews is full of young students, the day after term ended, the place was suddenly crawling with hordes of elderly silver-haired day-trippers who'd appeared as if from nowhere.

On Wednesday evening last week the town was full of very well dressed, drunk young people many of whom looked and acted as if this was the first time they had seen alcohol. I didn't expect to see so many students but got the feeling that there were lots of them in town, perhaps with parents, looking for accommodation or attending some new student introduction.

We were there for a walk before Christmas and at about 9:30pm there were 3 double deck buses parked on South Street with a lot of young uns heading towards them. The females in particular looked like they were going on a hookers day out.......
A friend owns several nightclubs in Edinburgh and when the students are away the turnover drops enormously. September & October are his best months.
