We are coming down to London in March next year and have flights booked to Gatwick. What is the easiest way to get in to London and if it is the Gatwick Express what is the best/cheapest way to buy tickets?

Ha ha. Gatwick Express is the quickest. Looking at The Train Line there’s no benefit buying early. Return is £23.90 first class off peak which is only £5 more than std. and a good idea as it stops in Croydon! 😆
From there (Victoria) use your debit card on TfL or cabs if you’re feeling flush. It also means you can stay at a hotel on the airport and not stress: the Gatwick train runs all night (albeit once an hour in the small hours).

Yes, it’s the quickest and therefore the best way in. I wouldn’t normally say this, but don’t bother with First Class. The seat and space is the same, have a quick look on Tripadvisor!

Depends where you're going in London but from Gatwick you don't need to buy a ticket just tap in with your bank card and it charges you the Oyster fare, same as on the tube. Gatwick Express takes you to Victoria but if you get on one of the Thameslink services it gets to London Bridge in just as quick a time or you can stay on them to Farringdon for direct links to the Elizabeth Line so can be useful for getting to East London or into the city. (Little tip for Thameslink, the rear 1st class compartment is declassified on all trains and has comfier seats, tables and charge points).

I can’t tell you how much the Passenger Services team at DfT hate that. A word of caution: if you use the GX gates at Gatwick the PAYG on your card is more than the Southern gates.
