I have been messing about on the BMW configurator for no other reason than I feel like it.
Each time I configure a car (M2, M3 Touring, M4 and M5) the configurator comes up with a message to say that due to supply issues not all the items I want can be added. On the M2 and M3 touring it isn't possible to get front and rear parking sensors and there were lots of other bits that came up with the alert.
Given that the M2 was priced at over £70,000 and the M3 Touring was a ludicrous mid £90K's, I can't think of any reason to want to buy a car at that level if you are going to have to leave out things you want.
I'm back looking at 4 litre Boxsters and 991's from the used pages!

It’s fairly common unfortunately. If you order a new Range Rover AB you no longer get the signature sound system with the noise cancelling functionality that makes quite a difference. JLR haven’t reduced the price, in fact I think it’s gone up be £7-8k since launch. There are other bits and pieces missing as well.
If you look in the classified, there are quite a few BMWs around a year old without HK and most won’t have wireless charging, hand free boot access etc. Despite that, there are unregistered M5s available with Tech Plus / Comfort Plus / Visibility pack, so everything I’d want.
Porsche are effected as well, decent headlights and Bose seems to be an issue on a number of models.
With missing spec plus long lead times, I just can’t get excited about buying anything at the moment.

It's common across VAG brands too. My Octavia order no longer comes with a reversing camera and you cant add it as an option as its not a mandatory piece of equipment in the UK market. The same car in the EU has it as standard on even the base model so they're prioritising their limited supply for that market.
The chip shortage is probably going to go on for a couple of years more at least until the current generation of models are replaced with new ones that have more modern electrical systems.

My best mate works at a bodyshop and told me recently that replacement radar cruise control sensors (?) for Merc E Classes are on back order to 2024.

These issues will continue for the short to medium term. I’m aware of one of the semi conductor companies that is retrofitting a full factory in Europe to cater to the car industry and their main customer is BMW. While this won’t fix the issues now, it is good to see these things being worked on.
How this will solve the parking sensor issue right now, I don’t know…

My car is reasonably well specced so it has all the sensors, auto parking, full iDrive etc but HK surround sound wasn't available, or wireless charging. To be honest, the only thing which slightly irritates me is that it won't connect my personal and work phones simultaneously for voice calls.

That’s a feature of enhanced Bluetooth which was an option on my 5 (which I added) and standard on the 7. I don’t have it now and do miss it. I’d miss HK a lot more though.

Yes, I would struggle without HK sound, or similar.
My Benz is loaded with sensors, including radar cruise, so I shall have to hope that nothing goes ping in the short to medium term.

The enhanced Bluetooth was packaged with wireless charging and was the only item I specced that was cancelled. At the time of collection cars were specced with HK but not built with it. Mine was lucky. They’re offering all sorts on the M and i cars but putting a disclaimer in but as pointed out in many cases they’re just not offering tech.
Model T spec before long.

I was told by Mayfair Porsche that they aren’t expecting my car to arrive without any crucial bits. We shall see.

I wouldn’t buy a car without a decent system. I’ve been spoilt on my last couple of cars, particularly the 7 which had the best sound system I’ve ever heard in a car, the 19 speaker Meridian surround system in my current car is very good but a step backwards. I added the Dynaudio system to the Golf, which is OK, somewhere between the HK systems in the new 3 and X5 in terms of sound quality, so a relative bargain for £550.

I think it is unacceptable that a new car might come without some bits of kit fitted. If I spec it, I want it and in some cases I wouldn't want the car without specific extras. If an order form said I might not get what I ordered, it wouldn't be getting signed.
I am feeling more and more that I will just hang on to my car for a good bit longer. I have the ceramic controls, leather dash and full door cards (with contrasting stitching), super adjustable seats which have both heating and cooling together with massage function. I have full surround cameras and far more other things than I need such as heated or cooled seats and heated steering wheel which come on/go off under and over certain temperatures.
When, or if it goes, I am going to miss the M5.
EDIT: and it cost me new, less than a fully specced M2 would cost and that doesn't even come with metallic paint!

You did get it for a great price, must be one of lowest depreciating cars you’ve owned? I could be quite tempted by this as our next family car, as long as it was fairly comfortable. Really nice spec (without anything missing) and a reasonable saving on the new discounted price after only 3 months, although it would eat into my new car budget by about £15k-£20. Might all be off for a while anyway, depending on what we decide to do about an extension that now we’re getting quotes in looks like it will be £40k+ more than I thought. I don’t want to finance a car again after buying the last 3, even more so with the way interest rates are now. www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202210020324611?atmobcid=soc3

I had a drive in an M5 Competition and found it pretty firm. Mine is firm too but a bit softer than the Competition in comfort and in Sport Plus.
If you are contemplating it you would really need to go and drive one before you get your heart set. For motorways and decent roads the suspension is very comfortable but the less well maintained roads are felt in the cabin. I sometimes put mine in Sport or Sport Plus for rough road surfaces which sounds counter productive but in some ways gives a better ride.
The P4s also gives a better ride than the PZeros.

Isn’t the LCI supposed to be a little bit more comfortable? Maybe it’s more about the tyres? I’d definitely have an extended test drive before buying anything. Academic for now, as I’m kicking any ideas or changing cars into the spring. It makes sense to run mine through the winter and gives us time to make a decision on the extension.

The HK in the 3 isn’t brilliant, but it’s a big improvement over the standard speakers.

Some BMW's manufactured in 2020 and 2021 were pandemic-specials. There is a load of M340i's on AT without HK, and a fair amount of upper-spec 5ers as well. It is isn't consistent, though, because so far I haven't seen a new M240i without HK. There aren't many M440i's without it either.
I would be surprised if any G87 M2's arrived without HK. It seems to be the default-offering for sound in every market that its being sold in.
