In my BMW (and so far as I recall all its predecessors), if you activate the auto recirculate air button, it stays on until such time as you turn it off.
In the Fiat (which does have climate control), it stays on unless you turn on the a/c button, in which case it turns off.
The Mini seems to have a mind of its own. You can turn the recirculate air button on and then the car arbitrarily decides when to turn it off. This seems to be a Mini “thing”, to save you sitting in stale air supposedly, but I am surprised it differs from the BMW, unless there has been a legislative change since 2016…
Either way it annoys my wife hugely, as she is obsessed with keeping the recirculate button on to “keep fumes from other traffic out”.
Anyone else encountered this or know anything about it?

Anyone else encountered this or know anything about it? Does it have an auto setting as well as (manual) on/off? My last couple of BMWs (and current car) have that functionality and it could explain why it’s not staying on. If it isn’t clear on the button, it might be in the settings somewhere. I like Auto because you get fresh air until it isn’t so fresh….

Or RTFM To prevent the air quality inside the vehicle from deteriorating during extended use of the recirculated-air mode, fresh air is added briefly at regular intervals. So it’s a ‘feature’, it doesn’t seem to have an auto function.

I've experienced this in a few other cars too, although I can't remember which. I think it was VW or Audi.

My car switches itself back to non re-circulating. I have no idea when it happens but it does. I tend to use re-circulating when I come up behind a smelly bus or taxi and sometime thereafter it switches back. It's never bothered me.

I so very rarely have cause to use it, it is not a function I am really that bothered about either.

I try to fart less with this function on but I cannot speak for my passengers 😆

I can't remember - does you Mini have climate control or manual aircon? In our (climate) we hardly use the recirculate. It does have a cabin filter fitted so I'd have thought that the worst excess of London traffic fumes might not get in anyway?

On my Lexus the auto recirc worked brilliantly. If you were following another car you didn't need to look and see if it was petrol or diesel as the recirc function would automatically switch on behind diesel cars and vans.

That’s how it worked in my 5 & 7 series, I can’t remember having to turn it on manually. The only difference was auto was operated via the button in the 5 (2 x LEDs, On and Auto) and it was in the climate settings menu in the 7.

The recirc function on the Polo is temperamental but reading the above comments, maybe it has some sort of wierd air quality analysis function built in

Have you been through all the settings? Most things on a Mini seem to have preferences such as the ring around the instruments glowing in time with the rpm, a set colour or just being off, sport mode being with or without the stiffened suspension, HUD switching on as you start or just when you activate it etc etc

It’s really clear in the owners manual, it reverts to fresh air automatically to protect the interior air quality.

Pretty sure the manual is on board in the car as well.

It is. And like I say I did Google it first…hence the phrase “it seems to be a Mini thing” in my OP…
Just odd that it differs in this respect from any other car I’ve owned since being married (it’s a button I never paid much attention to, outside say the Rotherhithe tunnel (or similar) but my wife is obsessed with having it on.
