So the job is going well, in fact, they’re really happy with me. Buying a house is a more complicated process now that I have money, a good credit history, a good salary and more. The bloody bank is a pain in the arse to be honest. They are not progressing my application and I’m 12 weeks waiting for loan approval now. The bank is literally asking me every question they need to know and many they don’t. Where did this money come from? Why did you not transfer all the money at once? Can you clear your USA credit card debt (all $700 of it). How did you clear it? Where did that money come from?
Not kidding you if banks were kept to the same code of business practice that they force on everyone else, they’d never have been in the crap they were in the past 15 years.
Oh, and a long time friend passed away earlier this week and the funeral is tomorrow.
And my brother in law passed away this morning.
It’s not been an easy few days.

Bloody hell. Never mind the house stress, there’s a couple of major events going on there.

Banking, in many ways, is still operating in the 19th century. Never mind moving internationally, moving in the same country can be bad enough.
When we moved from London to Shropshire (1992) I asked if I should move my bank from the branch I had used in London for many years to Shrewsbury. No need said the bank. So when applying for a mortgage I was rather pissed off to be told that I needed to "come into the branch for an interview". You mean Shrewsbury right? No, we mean where your account is. Are you kidding me? Needless to say we got a mortgage elsewhere.
Sorry to hear about your sad news of two deaths.

Ah yes, bankers........ Reminds me of an incident concerning a friend of my brother when he was at Uni in Durham. My brother's friend got a job in Maidenhead so asked for his bank account to be transferred there. Next thing he knew, he had a letter from the branch in Maidstone welcoming him as a new customer.....
When I moved from Wiltshire to Surrey, I used to have a second account that I used for my expenses. With the house move I wrote and asked for it to be transferred to my nearest convenient branch in Camberley but the bank in their wisdom transferred it to Farnborough...... I've always left my main account at the branch at which I opened it as a student, over 40 years ago, partly because I don't trust them not to mess things up if it gets moved, and now with so much done online I don't really think it matters at which branch your account is held, particularly as so many branches have closed for good

I forgot to add that they questioned the money I transferred from the US. I used a friends company to do it as he was able to do large international transfers that were free of fees. (Completely above board and legal, just not using a bank and giving them the fees). It was seamless. Until the bank asked me why the money was being held for 24 hours by this other corporation. I had to point out to them that when you transfer something at 10am in California, it’s actually 6pm in Ireland and therefore the money doesn’t show up in the bank…. Until the next day, therefore the money wasn’t held anywhere.
There’s a serious lack of logic in the banks.
Funeral number 2 tomorrow. Be glad when we are past them.

I use a company called Wise to transfer money around Europe. Almost instant and fees are a quarter of the banks’ and they use the spot rate.

Sorry to hear your losses, Rodge, I know it focuses us on our mortality; "we're only here once" as my cousin is fond of saying. Banks are arseholes, the biggest mistake we made was not jailing a good few of their directors back in 2008.

Thanks all,
Had another friend who is in his late 30’s/early 40’s in hospital last week. His wife found him not breathing and with no heartbeat, she called emergency services and administered CPR. A few days later he has been released- they suspect he had anaphylactic shock, but is currently not allergic to anything so they are figuring that one out too.
But, we got loan approval for the house today so will move in soon! Delighted as it’s been a year of living in each other’s pockets and I’m looking forward to having space again.

Sorry to hear of your losses. My brothers and I bought a house for our mum to live in a couple of years ago - being the first property I’d bought since 1985 I was astonished at the level of interrogation to get a mortgage - which was made worse by being three of us involved. Wanted to know where the deposit came from etc. If it’d been a place for me and Nana to live in, I’d have said, “Sod it, we’ll stay where we are!” Then funnily enough, when we paid the mortgage off earlier this year, they never asked any questions about where the money came from.

I must say that I find the financial interrogation that you get now to do anything rather insulting.
Times have changed. The last time I took HP out on a car (2001) the dealer asked for copies of bank statements and I said "no, you can't have them", I still got the finance. And the days of self-certified mortgages are a fond memory.

Now, bankers wanting to remove the bonus cap to increase 'competitiveness' which sounds like "We want it so do it".

Thanks all. Well the bank has been very quiet since we moved in, and haven’t given us our reduced mortgage rate that they promised we would get as it’s a green home. Waiting to see what happens there before I pursue it as we are still waiting for paperwork from the sale to clear. We’ve been in the house 2 weeks today and are settling in, although still surrounded by boxes. I’ve been flooring the living room and finished it, but need to spend a bit more time working on it over the weekend. Then there will be tiling, carpets, and more. The attached picture is the progress earlier in the week. My friend from last month who had the health scare is doing better. We had a wedding last week too so glad to be past those funerals.

I like the herringbone pattern in the flooring, not an easy one to lay. We've got solid oak in our hallway and beech, I think, in our sun room. It's been down 20 years. Hoover the dust up and then a quick once over with the Bona mop and it's as good as new.

Yes, you're definitely making life difficult for yourself there with that herringbone pattern. Admirable!
