So I've had the X3 for over a year now and I've never tried the self parking function in anger, not being confident of it, and thinking that no matter how good it is, I could do better. Yesterday I went to pick someone up in an unfamiliar terraced street and as I drove along the line of parked cars I spotted a gap and decided to try the function, pressing the button down by the gear lever. The car beeped to say it had found a spot and I held down the button and took my hands off the wheel as it reversed, spinning the wheel each way as it backed up, went forward, and positioned itself in, what turned out to be, a surprisingly small space. It also did it at a pretty good speed, quicker than I expected. Got to say I was pretty impressed.
So that's parallel parking sorted, I need to build up to reverse parking in car parks next (I'll also probably start a new thread about my next insurance claim!).

I tried it a few years back in an i3 and it was so difficult not to grab the wheel or hover over the brake pedal.

I’ve tried it in my last couple of cars, but just to see how good it is. Worked fine in both but I’ve always been decent at parking and now with mirrors that dip plus surround cameras, it’s a lot quicker / easier to park it yourself. The family truck has ‘parking space exit’ functionality as well, which I don’t think the 7 had, but I’m not 100% sure.
Has the X3 got reversing assistant? The 7 didn’t have as it’s a more recent feature but the X5 I had for a week did and I think that’s potentially useful.

I've looked up reversing assistant and it looks pretty clever and quite useful. 99% sure I don't have it though. It is a bit weird with the steering wheel twirling away and I'm not sure I'll use it all that often. I think I need some practice in a quiet car park to fully trust it.

My C-Max had it, but it required a bigger space to work than I could park in, using my brain instead of its computerised system

Had it on the Gorilla, the Mini has it and Eva has it (and the reverse assist). Never used any of them.

I use it sometimes, especially if it's a particularly large car, but honestly I do tend to do it faster myself most of the time.

I can see that parallel parking assitance is useful. It's a life skill that some people will never manage to learn (or want to do even if they can do it) so I guess that is technology helping human-kind.
Reverse assist - I just looked it up. It would not work round here. I meet loads of people on country lanes who need help. On having to back up, a look of total panic sweeps across their face and then they seem to back, at speed, immediately into the nearest verge and sit there helplessly. Reverse assist would back them up in the middle of the road and then leave them there, still helpless but 50 yards away.

Our Mini has got it, but after owning it three and a half years, still haven’t had the courage to try it.

So you put it in reverse, let the system do its thing, and when it needs to go forward it will indicate as such for the driver to engage the gear accordingly.

It will probably only control the steering on a MINI, with instructions on when to select D/R and leaving the throttle to you. So it will work exactly the same on a manual as an Auto.

The system in my C-Max was that it told you to go either forward or backward, and when to stop. The system just turns the steering wheel for you

I used the full system a few times in Northumberland last week as the parking was very tight. It was faultless but terrifying the first time as it does it surprisingly quickly. Once you trust it it was fine.
I’ve never tried the perpendicular parking as it seems a rather basic skill in comparison.

I tried it once in the Merc and decided I could park just as well! Never even tried the Evoque.
I have been playing with voice control in the cars, the Yeti system is way better and more accurate/useful than the Land Rover system

Never tried it but for parallel park I can see it being useful as it's something I hate doing and always find myself having to shuffle the car to get it close enough to the kerb as I'm always paranoid about kerbing the wheels, especially in hire cars.

Stopped at a pub on the way home today and let it parallel park itself. I probably should have warned the Mrs as she started to freak out as it started it’s wheel-twirling performance. 😀

That was what the system on my Octavia did - pedal input and gear change was still under full control of the driver. However it would alert you whether or not the space was actually big enough, and also if you were correctly positioned to get in said space safely!

Since this thread I have started to use the full parallel parking whenever possible. It is tremendous and always with a a little terror element that adds to the fun.
