Makes sense tbh. The Kuga and Puma are starting to outsell it (I see probably at least 5 Pumas for every new Focus) and their new family hatch EV will likely take on a new name like VW did with the ID3. That may mean the Golf goes the same way, at least in Europe and the Passat will definitely be dropped for an ID equivalent.

Ford have recently re-registered some old names: Escort, Cortina and Granada.
Will we see the return of the GLX or Ghia trim levels?

Ford and VW have shared engineering projects for electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
Expect Fordified versions of ID3, ID4, blah, blah, blah to come in the near future.

The ID3 has been styled in such a way that it's blindingly obvious it will replace the Golf.

Bit of an open goal for Ford to be honest. The interior trim quality, design and user interfaces are so poor on ID3 that Ford could right all those wrongs and give us something that makes the ID3 look like the upturned sick bowl it really is.

And here's me seemingly in a minority of 1 again, thinking that the ID3 is OK-ish, in a bland non-offensive way rather than being an attractive design

I agree, not ugly in the way that the Audi gob is or being too adventurous like some ugly muts. It seems to be the Warhole (Campbells) soup car. It will no doubt sell very nicely indeed, as will the other group variations.
They must be getting something right.

I wonder if the Focus name will live on as a Focus Mach-E or some such? Or are Ford going to use completely new names for their EV range?

The Capri might come back, but instead of being a cool 2 door RWD coupe, it'll be a 5 door quasi off roader crossover tall hatch with a 3 pot and hybrid assitance.
