So it has come to pass that Johnson must face a vote today. If I was a Tory MP, I'd vote to get shot of him in order to give myself the remaining half of the existing 5yr term to salvage the Tory party's rep before having to face the next general election. I think I am right in saying that no PM, in modern times at least, has survived a confidence vote and then gone on to win the next election for their party.
But I think (fear) he will win the vote this evening. What do you all think?

I'm guessing quite a few of the MPs have come back from their constituencies with a flea in their ear.
The animosity towards him (in particular) amongst people I know feels unprecedented, even amongst those who never speak about anything even remotely political. It's surprising how often someone brings it up in conversation now.

I think he'll get through, just. I'd get rid of him too, but have no idea who I'd want as a replacement....

I'd like to see him go and be replaced by a safe pair of hands, someone like Jeremy Hunt, dull but dependable. Though maybe the reforms he failed to deliver in the NHS might harm his chances.

I think he'll win comfortably and lead the party into the next election. Obviously, I don't want that to happen but that's my opinion. I also think he has more support among the general populace than we give him credit for.

I also think he has more support among the general populace than we give him credit for. People keep saying that but I’ve yet to meet anyone recently who supports him personally as opposed to the Tories. Then again I do live in London where his star has waned hugely since his stint as mayor.

I have nothing against Boris as a person he's just not PM material and should have been outed a long time ago.

He has a fair few commited supporters on this estate going by what I have heard but they are the older residents in their 80's so perhaps an age thing?

I would point out that the thread title is very apt? Has anyone ever tried catching a piglet?

Well indeed. It comes from Cameron’s nickname for Johnson which was “the greased piglet”, because he always got away with everything.

Well, the result has wounded Mr Johnson very significantly, politically. Perhaps fatally in terms of his career.
Personally, I don't see an obvious successor to Mr Johnson with the necessary charisma to connect with the electorate and win power for the Conservatives. The likes of Jeremy Hunt are just dull.
I am not especially bothered by what did or didn't happen at the parties/work events/whatever in 2020 and 2021. However, Mr Johnson's lack of integrity and general morally dubious character is unappealing to me and I do not share those values. But I do believe he is the best leader for the Conservative party at the moment.
Perhaps that seems irrational, but that's broadly what I think. I wouldn't throw him overboard if I was a Conservative MP.

It was definitely a narrow win, but I tend to the view that whatever the question is, the arrogant dilettante narcissist Johnson is never the answer.

Can you imagine a televised debate ahead of the next election between Jeremy Hunt and Kier Starmer? You'd end up being bored to death! Or worse forced to vote Lib Dem just to make it stop!
Boris doesn't have to go so on past form I imagine he won't go. Not while Carrie's enjoying hosting parties at Chequers. What that does for the Tories at the next election is hard to say. In many ways the electorate never forgets but in many other ways they are quick to forget if the right promises are made and Labour are still trying to work out what they stand for.

I’ve no idea why they had the VOC yesterday. The right time would have been after the two by elections coming up. Heavy defeats there would have seen him losing any confidence vote held subsequently.

I think there was a plan by pro-Fat Blonde Egotistical Cunt supporters that entailed pushing letters to the 1922 before That eventuality then voting for him to stay despite posting a letter with Brady.

But you should be voting for someone competent to lead the country, not some charismatic toss pot. I mean would you want Ant & Dec (popular people apparently but not really giving off an 'I can run the country well' vibe) in No 10? I agree that BoJo won't go. It'll be interesting to see how Reese Mogg weasels around the comments he made when Theresa May got 130 votes against her 3 years ago when the number against Johnson is brought to his attention.

Ant and Dec singing "Let's get ready to rumble" before going into negotiations over Ukraine with Putin would strike fear in his heart and bring him to the table.

We are of course supposed to be voting for our MP not who gets to be PM. Difficult in our constituency as the local Tory is decent enough but I'll be voting Liberal most likely to see of Bozz.

Rees-Mogg is a man completely capable of lecturing you that black is white today and ticking you off for not agreeing with him, and then arguing the exact opposite tomorrow with complete disregard for the obvious hypocrisy.

You are right Tim but there is a limit to these things and you want someone you feel will also have the gumption to get things done and stand up for our country on the world stage and to have the look and feel of a statesman. Boris has fallen a long way short of that (as I knew he would hence I didn't vote tory in 2019 - not that it matters in the safe seat of Horsham!) As it stands I don't see Kier Starmer being any more statemanlike than Boris and I'd probably apply the same to Jeremy Hunt which does make you wonder who else is not only the best fit but would also actually be able to win their way into that position either in a Tory leadership contest or a General Election. Happy to be proven wrong of course!

I will give Boris credit over Ukraine, which I think he has handled well, far better than Macron and the unknown fella now running Germany as a vassal state of Russia.

Happy to be proven wrong of course! On first glance the Tories don't appear to have a good choice of candidates but that's from the obvious ones that get mentioned - Truss, Gove, Sunal, Hunt and Javid. I don't fully agree with your comment about being statesmanlike though - having a leader that wears a suit that fits and a tidy hairstyle would be an instant improvement. I know it's quite shallow but seeing BoJo at some event a couple of months ago was embarassing and the eye was instantly drawn to him amongst all the others simply becasue he looked like Worzel Gummidge in a borrowed suit. As far as actions go I hope that any half decent leader in the UK would have managed to achieve the apparent success with supporting Ukraine. Clearly the Germans especially are doing a spectacularly shit job on that.

The German leader is doing a pretty shit job of anyone else in the world knowing who he is! That's partly my concern about Kier Starmer or Jeremy Hunt but then as you say, after Boris maybe at least having a leader that doesn't look like they've just been dragged backwards through a hedge would be a good start

I wouldn't mind the scruffiness half as much if the wretched man was actually competent and interested in more than just being PM.

I think Racing has made the point most Grandees are up in arms about. Johnson wants to be PM just so he can say he’s been there, done that - much like his tenure as Mayor. The trouble is we are living in a stable society where you are not at risk of persecution by neighbours or organisations. Most of our population’s interactions with the law are traffic offences or burglary related so having a leader that just bluffs about is not as important as it may otherwise be.
There is also the wider society mentality to consider. We live in a world where an instagram picture taken in a chance moment is suddenly a complete description of the poster’s entire lifestyle. So the gypo out for one evening at the Ritz is suddenly a “face” when in reality they live in a flat that would make Del and Rodney’s gaff look like the penthouse at the Shard. Boris fits this instant, short term gratification model really well as they recognise him, know enough about him to be amused and their lives are not massively affected by his foibles and swinging with the wind policy model.
We all said about Trump that the US got the President they deserved. We in the UK are no different.

History shows that was have has a boring-interesting thing going on with PM's for a while.
Wilson - interesting (if you're generous) Heath - boring Wilson - interesting (more interesting than Heath) Callaghan - boring Thatcher - interesting Major - boring beyond words Blair - interesting Brown - boring Cameron - more interesting then Brown May - boring Boris - interesting
So we're due a boring next PM whoever he / she is.

Having read Oliver Dowden's letter this morning, it clearly is damning as much for what he didn't say, as for what he did. Could this be the 'broken cricket bats' moment which will bring about the end of Boris?

I think about 90% of the electorate now believe Boris' position is untenable regardless of their political allegiance. Unfortunately we seem to have seen the demise of all the reasonable candidates for his successor, over the last 3 or 4 years and I am really at a loss who could replace him and provide a credible leader to go in to the next election.

No-one is putting themselves forward as a candidate because no-one wants to move in that hideously decorated flat above No.10.
