G'day folks,
One of the older residents is an ex gunnery instructor who served during the Korean war and was involved in the battle for the 'Hook' which the Black Watch suffered so badly.
He has spent some time in hospital recently and I found an AFV Club 1/35 cent MK 3 which is the type he served on.
Finding glues and paints is more like pulling teeth tho and my aim is to make sure he has everything he needs so he just sits and makes the thing over a bit of time. Not the resting type unless he has something to do and he has exhausted the tank type and factual books I have so something else is needed.
Basic weathering with lead and oil pencils will cover any staining required, no need for fake mud etc, he probably had enough of that and snow in 1951/52.
Any suggestions on best sources would be very helpful.
I have noted the Humbrol paints are rather meager but perhaps that is how they are sold now, been a long time since I did any of this.
Thanks.
I am guessing the so called 'sail' paint is, I am guessing meant to be 'Canvas'

You can order direct from Wonderland Models in Edinburgh. I used to spend hours there as a kid when we visited my Aunt every summer. Great shop.

I think they moved a few years ago to an industrial area near/in Livingstone. If I remember correctly, the father (and original owner) died a few months ago, so things may not be as smooth as you'd like Mike. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong though.

Colours are always somewhat subjective! Often the various makers versions of the same one are very different, I tend to find some in-period pictures of the item and look at some paint cards and buy whatever seems closest to my eyes. People get in a right lather about it but there was tonnes of variety in the time these things were real, and there is tonnes of variety now between say Humbrol and Tamiya and Valejo for the same thing.

You can order direct from Wonderland Models in Edinburgh. Meant to say, they were at the IPMS show in Perth a few weeks ago, with a pretty large selection of paints, model etc for sale. Doing a fairly brisk trade too, from what I saw.

That's good to hear.
I need to make a start on all the unopened boxes I have accumulated over the last few years....

Jack is not doing so well now, seems he will not be able to make the tank. A bit bloody sad but them's the breaks. Fingers crossed he gets to recover a bit but tbh, not looking that way.

What a shame. If he's still keen on having it built, there are folk who build on commission. I only know a couple of guys who do aircraft, but I expect there is more than one armour builder out there.

Jack was never good at sitting still and the main reason for getting a tank was he is a fellow ex tanker and I thought it might help with enforced rest. Right now he does not have the cognitive ability, he tends to drop on standing and is basically not 'there' enough to do much, even conversation is leaving him wheezing like and old train. An aneurysm (Aortic arch) as well as what seems to be congestive cardiac failure accounts for his issues and at his age they are not going to treat him with anything other than medication. Trying to get him a stair lift is tough going and going to take more time than he has at this rate but we do what we can.
I know, stuff happens and we are far from perfect. All I want to be able to do is say I did my best and I am pretty sure I have done that. The small society, one day and then the next, with a laugh along the way when we can.
The tank in question is a MK III Centurion armed with the 20 pounder, the tank Jack was an instructor on. He also served in Korea during the battles for the Hook. He is a very decent but reserved old guy and very little talk about Korea at all. Nor the Normandy campaign in Churchill's either.
