The seven seat SUV version of the EQS launched yesterday. Less likely to scare children than the iX. Range is just over 400 miles in 2wd version. Starting at £120k! www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mercedes-benz/eqs-suv/I am getting old or are prices getting silly? In my recent scout around for an etron replacement the pricing of everything was a bit of a shock. I see £100k as a shed load of cash that should buy you something very very special. The reality in the EV market is that £100k isn't even enough to get you into some pretty ugly (iX) or forgettable (EQS SUV) trucks. The x5 i looked at was circa £90k with a few options.

Mercedes adapting the Audi-esque "Same sausage, different length" design principle.
I genuinely wouldn't be able to tell it apart from all the other EQXs.

The x5 i looked at was circa £90k with a few options. 100% tax deduction for the employer in year one and negligible Benefit in Kind for the employee leads to the manufacturers pricing their vehicles as high as possible. A lack of chips also means production is limited so prices rise again. Once the tax benefits subside the prices will have to come down if the manufacturers still want to sell the cars. However in general prices have rocketed over the past 2 years. When I had my winter wheels fitted for the first time, in October 2019 there was an X5 45e in the showroom which I had a good look around. On the road and well specced it was about £62K. From what you have seen, the price has increased nearly 50% over 3 years. That is unsustainable but to get to the point of change we either need to be patient or accept a bit of pain. Next time around, when I change the M5 I certainly won't be spending as much (even though I got it at a bargain basement price) and my priority will be padding out my pension. I might venture into something more interesting even further down the line but for me, cars are too expensive at the moment.

I am getting old or are prices getting silly? Both. Join the club. But I'm even older. I remember when £25-30k got you into some new or nearly new interesting stuff.

I've long given up the idea of spending £25k on a new car - just gets you a car these days and not something you can really enjoy - more fun to have an older stable with a few cars in it when you look at what £15k, £10k or even just £5k will get you.
