I arrived at San Fran Airport at 3:15 local time on Saturday afternoon and by the time I got my bag, it was 4:15. headed to the rental place and the whole light rail system unloaded and I wasn’t at the front, but everyone went to Hertz, Alamo, Budget and Avis. I was the only one at National car rental so got seen immediately. I have the guy my details and he checked my account, updating my personal info and then told me I’m a member of the executive club so I could just go and pick whatever car I wanted. so walking through to the car park, I spoke to the rep and she said I could take anything from a particular row, and in front of me was a vast array of Nissans, Toyotas and Hyundais, all of which I’d driven before. But my eye was caught by the only non silver or black car there, a Mazda CX-5. So I checked it out, jumped in and drove off. First impressions, it’s not a bad place to be in. Off white leather seats, lots of FG, engine is ok, probably not going to win any races in it but has enough juice to get anywhere and has a range of over 400 miles. There’s plenty of space in it too, I’m traveling on my own but I know my family of 5 would fit with room to spare. The CX-30 I had before was a smaller car and I wasn’t as keen on it. Will update later on, but for the moment, here’s a photo.

Mazdas would be fairly high up my shopping list for a car except that there's no dealership anywhere near me. I'll be interested to see what you make of the CX-5

Spotted one in the identical colour in Slaley this afternoon and thought it looked a reasonable car.
Lindsey isn't after a sports car next time around so something that's "just a car" like this would be ideal.

My Dad's recently bought one and really rather likes it. It's quite a nice car and despite being a 2.0 NA petrol he's getting easy mid 40s mpg.

After almost 4 weeks and 2,500 miles of driving, I get to return the Mazda on Saturday. Thoughts from the various trips, it’s not a bad car. I could probably live with it. It does everything well but I wouldn’t say it’s exceptional at anything. The engine is willing to rev and the gearbox is more sporty than I’d have expected, even in standard settings. The pros: It’s comfortable, has a really good sound system (Bose), the AC is cold and the seats are warm. The headlights are extremely bright and sense oncoming traffic, often before I even saw them (in areas where there are dips in the road for example). They also turn into corners, same as my X5 did. Handling is decent but I didn’t have the faith in it on the twisty roads I was on today to carry more speed than it was at. Not quite the zoom zoom Mazda have been known for on occasion. I do love the paint job, although everyone seems to be driving a candy red version. The cruise control works well in a straight line and has braking/ radar distancing, but I don’t know what the lane assist is doing. It warns you when you are drifting over the line but doesn’t steer the car. I mention this because other systems I’ve used will do this and alert you to put your hands on the wheel if they’ve been off it for a certain period of time. The Mazda alerts if your hands are off the wheel but doesn’t steer which is annoying. The cons: It’s thirstier than I expected. Longer drives were giving around 27-29mpg and in traffic it’s doing about 22-23. The engine is noisey and isn’t all that fast, but revs easily to 7,000rpm. It’s spacious and would fit 5 reasonably well. Decent ground clearance too. The screen isn’t touch compatible meaning CarPlay is activated using buttons and knobs (remember them?) which I like. Overall, not a bad car, but I don’t think I’d buy one.
