..well, some of it anyway. As you all know, I like to fettle and fiddle with cars; engines in particular. Following a bit of work on a mate's car last year, I was contacted by his dad to do some work on his boat engines. I was initially unsure as I've never set foot on anything larger than a canal boat, let alone worked on one. But, I like a challenge, so I went for a gander last weekend. He wanted cambelts and spark plugs on both engines, as well as some refurbishment work on the heat exchangers (another new one on me) and some general TLC. Given that they are basically Volvo 940 engines with a stern drive and no radiators, I agreed and took myself down there on Saturday with the intention of doing just one engine that day - the second engine at a later date and the remaining work later still. Turns out they're REALLY easy to work on and I bashed out both cambelts, all plugs, aux belts and the majority of the heat exchanger(s) overhaul in 6 1/2 hours. Had a brilliant time doing it as well - just me, on my own, with coffee and Spotify, in a vast warehouse away from prying eyes. I know nothing about boats, but she's a big old girl:

Lucrative career as a mobile yacht mechanic in the offing ?
Sunseekers and the like just have bigger engines right ? - a brace of diesel v8s instead of two Volvo i4s ?

I'd love to have a crack at a few more boats - after all, an engine is an engine and given the nature of how boat engines are mounted, they should be spotlessly clean. I'd like to think that boat owners know other boat owners and if my man is happy with my work, he will pass the word on and I may get a chance to work on something else in the future. Something with a V8 maybe.

You could set up the nautical equivalent of Green Flag breakdown but instead sail under a skull and crossed bones.

As the old saying goes the two best days in a boat owner's life are the day you buy a boat and the day you sell it.
Top spannering Blarno!

5.0 engine? Hopefully a V8! Let me know if/when you buy it and if/when you want it servicing.

Small fuel tank - that engine could empty that in 2 hours. A petrol engine driving through an outdrive are all too often massive wallet emptiers - not the most reliable of things.

Nice work. Are they turbo'd engines? 4 cylinder or 6?

No turbos, just carb fed DOHC I4s. The block and heads are the same as the old 4 pot motors in the 740/940 and went out of production in 1994. The only differences between these and the road engines are direct stern drive, the lack of certain ancillaries (PAS and AC pump), a heat exchanger in place of a radiator (With an additional sea water pump run off the oil pump pulley) and a different exhaust manifold.
They are supposedly sought after by the tunin boys because the blocks are really strong and the heads flow very nicely. Good for over 500 bhp when turbocharged, apparently.

There is talk already with the owner of doing an engine swap to a pair of smaller, more efficient, possibly turbocharged engines. I've told him to sell the Redblocks it currently has because they are sought after amongst drifters and drag racers due to the forged cranks and free flowing heads.

It seems now that the marine world has moved almost exclusively to diesel power. Much safer for inboard engines, obviously.
