Looking like Haas will soon have no Mazipin or whatever his name is. Ineligible for Silverstone and no doubt other local motorsport organisations will follow. Assume also they will have no Uralkali money pretty soon. Will make the obstruction to Andretti Racing’s entry fade away pretty quickly I imagine.

I'd have imagined he would be able to compete under the same terms as Russian athletes at the Olympics?

Nope. His license is Russian. David Richards voted against the FiA rule to allow Russian drivers to race as neutrals so it got pushed through Motorsport UK as a ban so that Russia as a whole feels the consequences as they have no part in a global sport.

Not exactly a great loss to the sport is it. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

Good. Good riddance.
Poor driver and an even worse human being.

I do have it on good authority that he is a thoroughly unpleasant chap but I do hope that Haas can survive the season without the cash. And who do they bring in? Whos got the dosh and can get a Super License in such a short period of time.?

Listening to The Race podcast money isn't an issue for Haas, hes a multi billionaire and can easily afford to fund the team up to the cost cap he just chose not to as the opportunity to get a pay driver was too hard to resist (he's a businessman after all). As for who replaces him it would be good to see another rookie driver, perhaps Oscar Piastri, get the seat.

Indeed, HAAS is a very wealthy family, they own and run a machine tool business and could surely fund their entire F1 operation themselves, if they so wished

So he’s officially been canned. Who’s his replacement then?

I suspect they'll just want to play safe and go for a known ex F1 driver. Maybe Hulkenberg or someone like Giovanazzi as he has experience of driving a Ferrari powered car. I'd like to see a rookie but that takes planning and I think Haas will just want to keep their head down after this saga.

The Hulk would have been a good choice imho, he would have given lots of good feedback to the engineers for a start.

It would be good to see Hulk back but he's Aston Martin's reserve which complicates matters. Steiner has already said that Fittipaldi would be their first choice. He did a decent job as Grosjean's stand-in back in 2020.

Given the situation which necessitated the removal of Haas' main sponsor, i'd be happy to chuck £10 at them to help them through the season. If another 1m people did the same it might make a dent in their 2022 shortfall.

No one's driving their cars early this test: they got stuck on a broken plane. This makes a complete farce of Toto's comments about asking what Andretti Racing would bring to the F1 circus when one of the incumbent teams is in such dire straits having not chosen a driver to replace the pay driver, lost its title sponsor and can't transport its caravan around with the rest of the circus.

Magnussen is back.
I think most people were expecting it to be Giovanazzi, but that's a sensible choice IMO.

Not sure the Mag was much kop last time out. Maybe a bit harsh, He's not Hamilton on Verstappen but a decent peddler like most of the field. I think he'll be fast enough to worry Schumacher. He's certainly good entertainment.

More thinking of his motivation towards the end of his last spell, he can definitely pedal the car but if the motivation is not there he can fade quite a lot.
Mick need to step up this year tbh but he certainly can do that.

I’m glad that Magnussen is returning. I’m equally glad to see Gene Haas paying out of his own pocket to put a decent driver in the car. Mazepin’s rubles last year kept the team afloat, but at the cost of the performance of the team. Mick needed an experienced and competent teammate last year to measure against. Magnussen is the sort of driver who gets in and grasps new surroundings quickly. You only need to look at the top US teams happy to sign him in the past year; Chip Ganassi driving in IMSA, McLaren in IndyCar which was very last-minute, and Peugeot for their upcoming WEC programme. I think he got disillusioned by being an F1 backmarker, but even being an F1 backmarker isn’t the worst job in the world. Hopefully the Haas is a bit more competitive.

It will be interesting to see if Merc are in as much trouble as they're making out. We've been here before - nowhere in testing then winning the season opener - but apparently the car looks horrible on track.
Ferrari look to be in a happy place but I suspect Red Bull will start with a significant advantage.

I wonder if the 'no-pod' idea worked really well in the wind tunnel but isn't quite working as it should on track. That doesn't mean it isn't a great idea but it needs to actually work for them to get the advantage they hope it will give. Of course it could be that they're 2 seconds a lap quicker than the rest but are trying to play it down so no one else starts copying.
