Went to look at a car this morning. Mondeo wagon, 95,000 miles on it, fsh, all the essential extras but not all of them, clean history, 2.0 TDCi engine with 150 horses and lots of torques. 6 speed manual, sports but not leather seats. It drives well and is immaculate having mostly motorway miles on it. The guy is willing to knock something off the price as I’m paying cash… so I’m thinking of buying it. Also, because it’s non metallic black, it’ll be called The Hearse if I do buy.

Very tempted. It’s practical and will do everything we need over the coming year or two and as it’s only 5 years old, it’s still new enough to fit in at the new job. I had a mk1 hatchback years ago and it had a lot of space in the back so this thing will be great.
Plus I’ll only need one parking space as I can fit the Fiesta in it 😉

My dad had one of those generation Mondeo estates. It was great.

..... all the essential extras but not all of them .... Has to be Irish..... Should be a great car. Yeah, I read that afterwards and thought I should have phrased it better. Means it has Bluetooth, cruise, quickclear windscreen, dual zone climate but none of the fancy stuff 😀 It’s a car to do a job and it’ll be good at it.

Looks great, they really are a lot of car for the money.

The unofficial nickname for Bessy among my 'friends' is "The yellow hearse" mainly to to being a boxy estate car. That and upright rather than the look of later estate cars.

Doing the fun part now of organising insurance. With the same company I’m already with on the fiesta, and they want all of the same information again. The good news is the insurance is not expensive and getting a fully comp protected policy is less than my monthly car allowance, and that includes business coverage.
I’ve also realised that including this car, the last 3 cars I’ve owned will all have been black.

You'll have drunkards lurching out waving their hands at you if you go anywhere near a town centre in the evening at the tail end of the week!!

Looks perfect for what you need it for.
"Means it has Bluetooth, cruise, quickclear windscreen, dual zone climate but none of the fancy stuff". So what FG is it missing?

The only fg I’ve ever wanted in a car was something I had in a Mustang a few years ago. Air cooled seats. They were great in traffic in the California sunshine. But a diesel Mondeo in Ireland doesn’t have the same needs as a convertible Mustang in San Francisco.

Just got the insurance sorted. I called the company and they wouldn’t accept my no claims from the States because it’s already been applied to my wife’s car policy. So they requoted me with zero no claims discount and the policy jumped a whopping €170. For a fully comp with protected policy, I nearly bit the hand off the guy. They were quoting us in the thousands in the fiesta and while I’m paying more, I’m covered from tomorrow. Apparently it’s because I’ve had a full clean licence for over 20 years.
Picking the car up tomorrow morning from the dealer- he confirmed it will be ready then.

Nice looking car and they don't look under wheeled on those 17s.
Assume it's a Titanium without the X Pack ?

This is the basic cheap as chips Zetec. I like how it looks in all black and the ride quality is really good on the 17’s. Better than the 20” wheels with air suspension on my X5.

Picked up the car today.
First impressions- it’s very quiet. Bear in mind I’m comparing it to a 19 year old Fiesta but it is on a par with my X5, and it was a petrol version. It was a really good ride quality on any of the roads I’ve been on, including speed bumps and traffic calming measures. The clutch is very light, possibly the lightest I’ve had in any car I’ve owned. 1st gear is short and I might see how the car is moving off in 2nd. I did it in the Smax when I had that with the same gearbox and engine combo. The stop start tech works well and is unobtrusive. Had the whole family in it today when we went out and they are loving the extra space.
I’m currently driving with insurance and no tax or NCT (MOT). I can’t tax the car until I get the paperwork back for it and there’s a backlog for getting the NCT done- they restricted the amount that were allowed during Covid so now there’s a massive waiting list of months.
Wife seems to be happy and comfortable in it. The sound system is the standard one and has a good quality to it.
Handling is good enough for what I’ll ever need. Very little body roll and goes where it’s pointed.
The only thing really missing is the retractable cover for the boot. It was taken out when they were cleaning it and they forgot to put it back in. The guy at the dealership is getting it for me and I’ll pick it up next week.
I haven’t done any motorway driving in it yet so am interested in seeing what it will be like, although the torque makes overtaking easy on most roads.
While I bought it as a stop gap car, I think it’s one I’ll be happy with.
