Saw this on Facebook and wondered why they didn't stop in, ooooh, 2001.
I've never understood their appeal, or fathomed how they've become as rich as they are. They make music for people who donb't like music. It's background noise for middle class dinner parties, like Dido or Sade. It's the audible equivalent of wallpaper paste. If beige was a sound, it would be Coldplay.
Although, saying that, having a massive twat as a frontman must have benefits for the rest of the band as nobody knows who they are and they can happily drive their Bentleys and Lamborghinis in peace, knowing that the third-rate Bono wannabe that is Chris Martin will get all the headlines with his drum-beating, tofu-eating, stupid-child-naming, whining like a lovesick 14 year old ways.

I also thought of Blarno when I read this story. Weird that anyone would announce their retirement four years in advance, it's not like they need to make any massive changes to their infrastructure to go carbon neutral, or leave the EU or something... Anyway - slightly sweeping dismissal in my opinion, Iain. I think there are a few tunes on their first couple of albums that elevate them several notches above the likes of Dido and Sade. 'Daylight' off A Rush Of Blood To The Head is certainly decent, IMO. But yes, an annoying frontman, beyond any doubt!

Well...... in theory I should be announcing my retirement 4 years in advance. The difference is that this Chris Martin will have to have calculated how he will be able to survive on a pension at 66.

I really liked Their first 2 albums , and some tracks off the 3rd.
Some of my pals went to see them at the NEC/NIA (can’t remember which) and said they were great live.
Don’t mind Sade either. She’s got some good tunes

She’s got some good tunes Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head were good albums and rightly critically acclaimed, but the following albums never really clicked with me.

Glad to agree with Blarno on how on Earth they got so huge with what is glorified lift Musak but as a live performer Chris Martin certainly looks like he means it.

She’s got some good tunes I agree with your first sentence. Coldplay have basically just followed the same trajectory as many bands: good first couple of albums and then basically downhill from there. To every general rule, there are also exceptions... Agree also with Jeff that Chris Martin really 'means it' as a live performer. That's kind-of what impressed me about the band in the first place, but now it just means he's effing annoying.

Just snobbery not to like any Coldplay. The automotive equivalent might be a Vauxhall who make predominantly shit cars but every now and then they smash out a Carlton Gsi.

Honestly I didn't like Coldplay's early stuff. I find it too whiny. But their later dancey tracks I kinda liked.
Probably says more about my tastes in music really. I was into that electronic dance music fad for a bit (Avicii, David Guetta, Calvin Harris et al).

Not sure I can claim any sort of music snobbery when most of my current listening is SN Studio shuffle dance versions of old Euro dance tracks, with E-Type’s This is the Way a particular favourite.

No snobbery at all, I just hate his voice. He has no power, no balls, no discernible style or range. He can carry a tune, but his voice has all the charisma of a 3 week old cucumber sandwich dipped in dogshit.
I also find the music deeply forgettable and weak.

Blarno - this should bring a smile to your face, if you haven't seen it already:
Warning - may contain (heavy) festive music. But even the most bah humbug will probably enjoy it!

I’m not particularly bah humbug, but that’s terrible, could only listen to a few seconds at a time before skipping. I almost said it was a racket but realised I would sound like my dad! Even less vocal range than Chris Martin, perhaps that’s why I didn’t like it?

Chris Martin doesn’t have a particularly good voice but that’s never been a barrier to commercial success. It never stopped Lemmy from Motörhead, for example.

He can sound awful at times, but it hasn't stopped 'The Stone Roses' being an utter masterpiece and one of my all time favourite albums.

Even less vocal range than Chris Martin, perhaps that’s why I didn’t like it? I agree, but then I'm not into heavy metal. To me it all sounds the same. Led Zep and a couple of AC/DC tunes are about as heavy as I go.

Sade was of her time. Cool in the 1980's. But I preferred Tracy Chapman at the time - more edgy. Mind you, invoking "Dan's law", her first two albums were good but when I've heard later stuff and didn't like it at all. The politics became more important than the music.
I don't have a strong view either way on Coldplay. I can see the irony in that comment.....
