The XFR has just had it's 10th birthday service plus MOT. I've had it six years now.
The service was fine, but a big one as a lot of stuff seems to come up at that anniversary. But it failed the MOT, on the tyres. One front borderline, both rears failed. Not due to wear, but due to a crack on the inside right on the join of the tread and the wall (one on each tyre, no more). The winter set are on and I had not noticed. The fronts came off my previous XF and the rears were new to the car six years ago when I bought it. I'm really not sure if that is a good life or a bad life for a tyre?
So, big debate with myself. Replace the winters with another set, or just run the summers all the time? My first thought was that as I'm not using the car as much as I used to, summers would be fine. But then I'm just as likely to want to use it at any time of the year, and having had a few big cold day "moments" in my first XF before I got the winters on it, I wouldn't want to have that happen to me, or worse Mrs PG on a cold or wet winters day. Therefore, I 've handed over as near as dammit £1,500 to mytyres for a new set of four winters. The fronts are OK, but the rears are financial robbery at £450 each. I did try to shop around, but 285/30 R 20s are not that common in winter sizing and nobody else had any in stock. People said "they do not usually have them until early December". I mean, it's not like it's the winter is it
I'm hoping they arrive this week (are promised) as I want to get the MOT redone by 30 November as we're meeting my family for lunch after that and I'd rather take the Jag down to the South East.
Jag pointed out a few things might need to be done in the next year too - the front suspension has slight play on one side (probably bushes) and the brake pipes have some surface corrosion.
I did have a "twist or stick" debate as well as pat of my decision process. As I said in the other thread about the Shogun, we're probably running that until it expires. The Mini is great and is the goto car for day to day use. But we prefer the Jag for longer journeys and, importantly, I like owning a V8 Supercharged car while we're still allowed to. So, for now it stays.
