I have been getting numerous e-mails and have also had a couple of phone calls trying to get me interested in the new BMW i4.
Having seen that they are quoting 360 miles range, I decided to spec one to see what it would cost.
First things first, the quick version with 500hp only has a range of 260 miles making it less than the i-Pace which really defeats the object of even contemplating one. However by the time I had finished speccing the car as close to the M5 as I could get, it was £72K! Even then, it didn't come with some of the FG my car has such as leather dash, soft close doors or massaging and cooled seats. Worst of all though, it would cost more than the M5 cost me and I also had a free day for two at PalmerSport and a day at Silverstone included with the M5.
I will be keeping mine for a while I think.

I specced an i4 and also got to £72k ish. My main issue is that the interior isn't even close to a 5er imho and driving experience, handling, power, range are all very well but sitting in it is what I actually do in all traffic and road-type scenarios so is a pretty important thing.

I was thinking that looking at it would be the worst thing of all but then had a look online and realised I was confusing it with the ibig X Drive SUV thing.

When my wife saw "the ibig X Drive SUV thing" she said it was just about the ugliest thing on the road. Obviously the current BMW design team are keeping up their tradition.

Is the i4 an electric equivalent to the 5 Series? Or is it the 4 Series which is just a slippery 3 Series? Or have they squeezed another niche somewhere in the middle?
Yours,
Confused of Cheshire.

4 Gran Coupe shaped, and all the prettier for it.
The next 5er should be developed around a battery and PHEV base design so there can be an Alpina B5e, a fully electric i5, some base PHEVs like mine and a PHEV M5. That's what I'm hoping anyway: currently the PHEV 5 series' just lose a huge chunk of space for a battery pack that wasn't designed into the package whilst maintaining weight balance.

It's nothing more or less than a pure electric version of the new 4GC.
You know my thoughts on the price of these new EVs. But actually a new M440i xDrive GC is similar money to a i4 M50:
When I bought my 440i GC five years ago next month, the list price OTR was circa £43k and optioned up it was c.£48.5k. I paid c.£39k.
New M440ix version now: list price OTR: £55.7k. Optioned to match my car: £61.9k.
That's some hefty price inflation in just five years.

Prettier than what?! I’m not just talking about the obvious either, there’s too much metal above the rear wheels (as per 4 coupe) which spoil the proportions in profile, huge great bits of plastic on the rear corners and some trim around the area where exhaust pipes would be which means the rear just looks a mess as well. £70k for a 4 series is crazy, whatever the power unit.

The top version of the M4 with XDrive has a list price without extras (although it is well specced) of £99K. No wonder Porsches are selling well.

The latest Macan S, which now has the 385bhp 2.9 V6 from the old GTS, lists at something like £54k before options and I know which I'd rather have. Safer place to put your money too.
