It often happens in democracies - the tail wags the dog. A vociferous zealous minority makes enough noise to get its way on a topic on which the general public is generally indifferent. I suppose, in this democracy, the Government could offer the electorate a referendum on insulating Britain, and a majority vote to insulate Britain, then the Government could deliver an insulated Britain. No? I think that already happened! Although possibly that was about insulating from reality...

Sounds like there will be some action from the Government at last
Climate change protesters who have repeatedly blocked traffic on Britain's busiest motorway face tougher sentences, including up to six months' imprisonment, the government said on Sunday.
Activists from Insulate Britain want the government to commit to providing insulation for 29 million homes. In recent weeks they have blocked slip roads, glued themselves to the road and poured paint onto the carriageway of the M25, which runs around London.
The government said it would amend existing legislation to increase penalties for obstructing a highway to an unlimited fine, six months' imprisonment, or both.
The police will also be granted new powers to seize equipment that may be used to "lock-on" protesters in the measures

250 grand fine for first offence 25 years in prison for the second Sorted Personally I think that as middle class protesters (plus probably a few champagne socialists amongst their number), fines don't worry them and in prison they think they'll be martyrs. What they don't understand is violence, having being brought up to assume that their hoooman rights mean that nobody can ever do anything bad to them. So a well placed bit of brutality - administered by either a passing officer or the general public, will have much more effect. XR have not returned to Canning Town tube station so far.

Whatever happened to riot police and baton charges, or aren't they allowed to do that any more?

I am starting a new protest group, we are called “ Insulate Britain….from Insulate Britain “ Once it is known where they live, they get blockaded in their houses so they can’t leave, and then a lorry load of expanding foam is pumped through the letter box. Easy to be a climate hero when you’ve got a 9 pack of quilted bog roll and a cupboard full of twixes. In all seriousness, surely there must be lawsuits to begin if these arse biscuits are wilfully blocking ambulances ?
Sign me up.

I cannot find the original but I like it. I caught a bit of NCIS while waiting for the lunchtime news and they were talking corn dogs. Got me thinking it was a good idea for XR and IB but you would need a huge truncheon. I would not want to use the truncheon afterwards either.

I suppose one point that they make is that the way they've been protesting has made us all talk about them. So in many ways its been quite a successful campaign. If they'd just waived a few placards outside downing Street it would have made the news but not produced a two page thread on a motoring forum, even if we are just slagging them off and thinking of fun and amusing ways of stringing them up. It's the same you could argue with extinction rebellion. You can argue with the way they've gone about things but they are getting their message out to a lot of people.
The fact is we do need to have a grown up discussion about climate change and I can understand their standpoint that the upcoming COP26 will probably just be a load of world leading coming in on private jets and delivering little in the way of substantial promises because any real changes will have to be paid for by the people they rely on to keep voting them into power. As much as we all say we want to do our bit, the overwhelming majority of people don't want to have to make any changes that will cost them money so all these world leaders will offer is token gestures that allow the can to be kicked down the road for the next leader to have to deal with.

Whatever happened to riot police and baton charges, or aren't they allowed to do that any more? Nope. Too nasty and someone might get hurt. A 6 month sentence means, in reality, 3 at the very most. Not many of them would get the maximum anyway. They'd be given 6 weeks more like. Then out in 3.

The question was partly rhetorical, but I remember sitting in Pizza Hut in Darlington, watching the police in full riot gear disperse a large group of Hartlepool supporters by way of baton charge.
We have gone completely soft. These idiots need a good old fashioned kicking. Stopping an ambulance is inhuman.

Not easy to find a balance it it? If it happened over here the police would have cracked down on them so hard and sent every single one of them packing to where they belong (most likely jail) before they would even know what had hit them.

We insulated our house years ago - didn't make a great difference to our fuel usage - let new tech heaters just installed in my mum's home seem to make a huge difference so whilst insulation is one tool to reduce fuel usage, not sure it should be top of the list of 'things to do'.

We have well insulated walls here, a real pity the window frames were not installed correctly and leak like a sieve. Draughts even with all the windows and doors closed. The wonderful front door, meant to be fire resistant? Warped. Only two years old now.
