Always a nervous time, taking a car you recently bought to the garage for the first time, especially when it's a classic from a marque equally known for issues and high repair costs!
Anyway, I just took it to Northway Porsche, situated handily near the Porsche GB parts depot (and - having run back after drop off on Wednesday night and then there again at lunch today to collect it, I can accurately say is exactly 16km along the canal footpath from here). I chose them from a random internet search of local specialists based on their online reviews and location. Nice to deal with. Anyway they called on Thursday morning early - and I thought "oh shit, they've found something massive" but it was to say they thought the spark plugs needed doing, and a couple of coils were starting to crack, did I want to do them all? Their verdict: its in great condition, and appears never to have been abused/crashed/used in the winter. Phew!
It was still a hefty £944 (for a major service, coils, plugs, and brake fluid - using racing fluid) - but labour was only £170 plus VAT of that lot. Its on a 2-year service schedule, alternate minor/major, and I know from its history that it had a minor service the last 2 times, 18 months ago, and 2 years before that, so the plugs were old in Boxster terms, and the coils seem a bit of a service item on them as well, so fair enough. Half the service frequency of the XFR, twice the price each time, figures...... I suppose the plugs are on a 4 year cycle, and the coils should last longer, so maybe that's not fair.
They clean out all sorts of drain holes and so on at the major service, basically I wanted it serviced and fluids changed sooner rather than later in case I track it, and also to get a second opinion on the condition before I exacerbate any issues. But if that's the cost for this, from a specialist said to be very reasonable, I'm glad I paid more for a good 987 rather than tried to get one of the many slightly tired 986 S's out there back into shape...
It seemed to have a slight flat spot in the mid range previously, it will be interesting to see how it goes now - the A4 in traffic gave no proper chance to tell, except that it did feel very good overall. Driving ahoy this weekend!
