Getting ready to send my eldest off to University. Helpfully, they have supplied a list of essential items and some recommendations. Essentials include a dinner suit, a normal suit and a gown! Luckily for my wallet (perhaps less luckily for him) we're the same size, so he's taking one of my suits and what will now be the family dinner suit! The gown surprises me. My memory is that was part of graduation.

Are you sure they mean a graduation gown and are not just covering all bases in these "gender fluid" times?

Are you sure they mean a graduation gown and are not just covering all bases in these "gender fluid" times? Nope. It's an undergraduate gown that's required for some enrolment ceremony.

I trust you've packed his monocle and hand crafted alpenstock with solid silver goose head atop it.

I trust you've packed his monocle and hand crafted alpenstock with solid silver goose head atop it. We're going for more of a working class twist. Kentucky Fried Swan.

I must say the Bullingdon Club has lowered their standards since my days...

Depends on what he's reading at unversity... the art of fine dressing, or attending society balls ??

When I was at Oxford (1978-1981) an undergraduate gown had to be worn (with a normal suit) for matriculation (which was a formal ceremony welcoming you to the university and which you had to attend) and for formal hall diners if you attended them (although no suit was required). Private dinners (sports clubs etc) require the suit but no gown.
I expect Cambridge at the time was pretty similar, so maybe standards have been maintained! I'm sure Dan will be along to confirm or otherwise.

Definitely required for some kind of ceremony - what was Cameron wearing when he was doing porcine based unmentionables ?

He'll need his undergraduate gown for formal halls, as Pete says above. The gown is cheap as chips (or swan).
Dinner suit is not essential but very much desirable. If he joins various clubs and societies, or is sporty, or gets in with a certain crowd, there will be lots of opportunity for dressing up in it.

See if you have a Slater's nearby, they'll do a dinner suit for peanuts and cheaper than a few rentals
