Asking for the experise of folks here - a few nights back I was driving along the M6 and M60. Not too busy but still a good dozen cars in my immediate vicinity in both directions, driving safely under the limit. Out of nowhere I got completely dazzled by a bright white double flash in front of me and to the right. No accidents or anything but still a very bright distraction. My assumption so far is that it was a Gatso camera grabbing someone speeding the other way, and everyone around me got the same lightshow. But I was wondering - since they aren't meant to be front facing because they dazzle drivers, should one have been set up such that it could dazzle oncoming traffic? Is there some other camera or explanation for it happening? Out of interest, are Gatso flashes focused enough that only the person getting flashed should see it or is it bright everywhere on the highway?
Like I say, I don't expect anything to come of it since I was driving safely, but it was a little disconcerting to be driving at night and have a bright light in your face out of nowhere. Just want to know if I'm right it was likely someone speeding the other way, or if there's something out there I've not come across before which would also be going on.
Cheers

Welcome.
Like you say, most likely a car the other way getting flashed. Cameras flashing forwards such as Tuvelo are infra red and can't be seen.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, every rational bit of explanation I have says that it was probably a Gatso getting someone going the other way. But we all have that silly irrational worry when we know we've done nothing wrong but are still needlessly anxious around the powers that be I guess.
Figured I'd check in in case the coppers have installed a new bit of kit since I passed my test (and hasn't yet propogated through the usual search results) to keep an eye out on in future.
