I have a full day of high speed tuition at Silverstone on 30th September - it came with the car but due to my house move and holidays in 2019, I couldn't manage their one and only date and last year was totally cancelled. This year they are only running one day.
My question is how do I get there and back?
I can take the car, I can take the train or I could fly but apart from the car, I still need to get from London to Silverstone and I will need at least one night's stopover, if not two. I have never been to Silverstone so I am completely clueless on this.

Have fun. Is it on the full Grand Prix Circuit and in what car?
I can only assume the easiest thing to do will be to drive but your spoilt for choice for cheap hotel options in the area.

The train into Milton Keynes isn't too bad (30mins <20miles) and Hertz have a location at the station. Luton Airport is under an hour from the circuit. I think I'd drive if I was you.
Lots of hotels nearby, there is a Premier Inn (Brackley Hatch) a couple of miles from the circuit, Hilton/Marriott c10 miles away in Northampton.
If you need anything more specific, let me know as I'm a relative local and drive that way several times a week.

Birmingham airport isn’t far away either . I know you can get cheap flights from Edinburgh/Glasgow on easyJet
You’ve also got the travelodge on the a43 by the maccies, that’s really close to the circuit

Thanks guys. My wife has said she might come along so I need her to decide for sure before I decide what to do!
The day will be spent in M2's, M3's and M4's. I believe they sometimes have an M5 but it cannot be guaranteed. It is part of the MDrivers pack that my car came with: a full day's tuition and the removal of the speed limiter, not that I am ever likely to explore the difference between 155mph and 190+ either on track in my car or on the Autobahn.

Does the tuition offer you the chance to drive your own car around the Silverstone circuit? If it does, surely the temptation has to be to drive there! My younger daughter bought me a ticket to the Silverstone Museum for Father's Day, so I have to work out when I can get there, if it has to be pre-booked due to "social distancing" etc, but if there is an option to drive your own car around the circuit I'll be taking it (so long as it's not prohibitively expensive). Ticket validity is apparently a year but I'd like to go this summer or early autumn if at all possible, rather than delaying. May work it into a week's holiday as it's not looking good for flying to Europe at the moment

Chris, I have no desire to take my own car out on track, or at least not properly. I think anyone who has raced will appreciate what I mean when I say that on a track, I need to be on it and giving it everything. There is a level of absolute concentration and a feeling of being in the zone that actually makes it safer but at the same time I don't want to do that to my road car: I'm not wealthy enough to bin it!

Just for the experience, you don't need to be pushing but just have a bit of fun and be able to say "I've driven my car around the Silverstone F1 track". A bit like I can say that back in the 1970s, I drove my parents car round most of the Monaco GP track

You could make a few days of it and drive down visiting a few other places along the way such as Great British Car Journey in Derbyshire (I think Bryan's been there and said it's quite good) or the British Motor Museum at Gaydon, perhaps even take a trip to Caffeine and Machine.
As others have said theres quite a few hotels near the circuit although whether your wife is willing to slum it at a Travelodge next to Maccie D's is another matter! Find a nice country hotel though or perhaps somewhere in Stratford or Leamington Spa.
