As the VW Up suffered a wee accident, I was given this as a replacement and I'm really impressed. As a rule I do like Fords, I served my time in the era of Mondeo man and the original Puma, so have enjoyed that Ford feel to a drive.
This Puma is a high spec one and, although initially put off by the colour, like the look of this one. 18" wheels, full colour coding and primer paintwork attract a lot of attention. What really got me was the lovely tactile interior, with an upmarket feel to all the touch points. Space is more than enough for my needs, easily taking 5 of us on a short trip and more than adequate for our family of three to use all the time.
I wouldn't need or want a bigger car, it's compactness makes it a doddle to drive in town and probably helps with the 50mpg plus fuel consumption. This is despite the 150bhp 1.0 Ecoboost which is a pleasant unit to use. Mind hybrid means a motor helps power the engine at lower revs and also gives a lot of engine breaking, vastly reducing the amount of brake work required. It can certainly drag it's body about easy enough and is swift enough that a Mk5 GTI couldn't outdrag it in a Roundabout GP.
Handling is very tidy, with the body feeling well controlled at all times, but still manages a firm, but not uncomfortable, ride.
£25600 is the retail price and that seems like good value in a time when £20k buys little more than a base Focus.
Things I don't like. It has a horrible little switch on the end of the stalk for the rear wiper. It has a stupid parcel shelf/luggage cover. .....but that's it.
Would I have one? Yes. If I look at all the vehicles in the same category, I'd have a very short list of vehicles to even consider. The two vehicles that are similar that I have experience of, Audi Q2 and Volvo XC40, felt dull in comparison, both in looks and the way they drove. Surprisingly, I also much prefer the interior of the Puma.
If you are interested in a vehicle of this size, give it a go

My Dad has just recently purchased a brand new Puma ST, after 30 years of owning Hondas. He had it for 3 days before it threw up an oil pressure light and has been back with Ford ever since. This was in June.

I wrote a short review after I was loaned one when the Fiesta was serviced and MoT'd earlier this year. I was so hoping to love the Puma based on what I had read in the motoring press about it, but I detested it

This was in June. Fool ! If Honda still made the sort of cars I wish to own, having had one Honda I'd have had another in an instant. Actually having said that, I've basically had almost no problems with any of the Fords I've had apart from the Galaxy which was really a VW. Your dad must have been unlucky

Probably.

You said overall it was OK, not that you detested it….?

My dad is looking to buy one. He’s had a fiesta for the past few years and is now in his mid 70’s. He’s looking for something easier to get in and out of. I’ll be interested to try it out when I’m back.

My wife, when the occasional urge to change her car flits into her head before rapidly vanishing again, has commented that she’d like a small SUV next time because, only mildly ironically, she increasingly dislikes driving around London in a tiny car on roads clogged by behemoth SUVs. She feels at risk of being squashed.
This had made me think that a Puma wouldn’t be a bad shout but I simply can’t get my head around the prices of cars these days. Plus I just hate all these identikit dreary all-black and plasticky interiors - they are just so soul-shreddingly dull. What is wrong with a bit of colour, a bit of creative spark, a bit of bloody pizzazz?
It’s what I have against modern Audis, especially any of the S or RS versions that I would want - the choice of interior is usually black, black or possibly paedo’s shoe grey, with interior trim in saucepan-silver or cretin-fibre.

That is the kind of review we need to see. Actually the heads of design and marketing in many companies need to read them too. Or, are they reacting to the urge to shove shiny and glassy into EV's?

How about a Captur, or would that be too big?

It's Spanish (made in Spain) and his Fiesta may well have been made in Germany

I think he’s known too many people who have had Renault’s over the years to get one. He’s never been a fan of French cars in general or of Italian cars, but he does appreciate Ferraris.
Every car he’s owned since I’ve been alive has been a Ford of some sort, with 2 exceptions. A mini that he bought for my mum in the 80’s and a Mk2 Golf Gti that he bought because Ford didn’t have anything fun for sale back then.

Maybe he should wait for the alleged forthcoming Ferrari SUV ??

If you go by past fortunes, the new Lotus 4X4Xwhatever should be interesting, even if it is just finding new ways for it to break down and shock people.

I can't get the photos to upload, but it's like this one www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107074745666?atmobcid=soc3I loved the red stitching and the virtual dash (I thought I'd hate that). The interior was one of the highlights. I did see a low spec version over the weekend, and it looked pretty rubbish with small wheels and painted in doom blue.

When you look at the price of that lightly used new Puma, it can only be described as a bargain. I can remember we visited the local Ford dealer over 20 years ago seriously looking to buy a Puma. The salesman was adamant there wasn't a penny's discount and the basic list price was around £16K with the car likely to cost nearer £17.5K in the spec we wanted. Probably upwards of 25 years later the price hasn't increased much, unlike most other things. We bought an MX5 instead!

Got a text from my dad. He picked up the car today. I didn’t even know he was buying it this week.
Metallic grey, eco boost 7 speed dsg auto. He sounds very happy with it. I’ll see it in a few months time when I’m back.
