Last week I booked the XFR in for a brake pad change all round. The pads are about 85% worn (second set of rears, original fronts, at 52k miles), the discs (all original) are unscored and barely lipped, and I wanted to use the same Pagid pads I used on the last one (not too much initial bite, nice feel when you push harder). I bought the pads and sensors on euro car parts.
I booked the car in with a local specialist (of many marques) that we used when the Q3 throttle body got coked up and needed replacing. I was very clear what I wanted and brushed off their "all modern cars need the discs changing as well as pads" nonsense. The A5 just had a main dealer service with no advisories and the discs on that are twice as worn, and also scored badly. They're fine.
The day before it was due to go in - yesterday - they called me and took about 10 mins to tell me that they can't fit customer supplied parts. Even in sealed boxes with the invoices present.
I have now booked in with someone else - but WTAF? They charge through the nose for their time - to the extent I was 50/50 on using them again - do they really need to make massive parts markups as well? Why can't they just charge a bit more for the work? Crazy approach. They trade on reputation and I have a good mind to give them a 1 star review on Google now, if I was needing the car for work and they just cancelled on me the day before like this, and it was not able to be driven, I'd be livid...
If the rears were like the fronts - massive brembos where you just pop out a couple of pins and jobs a good'un - I'd do them myself but the rears are standard XF items where the pistons need screwing back in with some tool - not something I'm familiar with...
