Well, despite the heat I went to address the faults on the beast and it was a bit difficult, but fun. I always enjoyed doing what needed doing and I did not realise how much I missed this sort of thing.
Fuel 'leak'. one of the pipe to pipe connections had been forced most of the way off the metal connector. This, whatever or whoever did this did me a favour. While the rubber fuel line is mostly sound, the ends were wearing pretty good so this would have to be replaced anyway.
Oil change went better than I thought it would considering I had to crawl under the car for both items but it's done, even though the local motor supply shop was eye wateringly expensive, the oil plus the drip tray/oil container together came to £65.
While the repair and change of oil do not even get on to page one of Mark's works I feel oddly satisfied and happy.
How sad is that but I'm still happy as.

Why is it sad? I've carried out a few wee things on the mighty Skoda and, while none of them would set the world alight or trouble either Mark OR Blarno on the mechanical front, I was pleased with the results, enjoyed doing them and felt a deep sense of accomplishment when I'd finished.
I could swap out engines, mend gearboxes and all sorts of other stuff as a younger man, but I've learned my limitations more recently! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I used to do all sorts and not even blink, now I work out how to get past a fuel leak and feel like I have done a marathon. Trouble shooting the location of the dropped fuel line and threading it through the engine ans suspension bits is more than I have done for a long time.
I will have to go and get some more furl though so two tanks in what would usually take a half a tank at a push and I found myself saying things like "That will never work, other way dummy". A bit like relearning how to do things which is both sad and a great sense of joy both. I am celebrating with a beer which is going down nicely. I wonder if I could squeeze a 911 turbo motor in there? It might make hills a bit easier........

I think you've done well, Mike. It certainly gets more challenging to do some of the jobs that require physical body contortion and multiple bendy limbs as you get older.

Thanks to you both. I had a minor lake of petrol soaking my overalls and minor petrol burn up my right arm which is a nuisance but honestly, it's worth it. Apparently there are some fuel shortages in some places but I am going to have to go and get some which will also allow me to put the system under pressure and be sure it's tight as a drum.

Well done. I love a little tinkering with a car. It's the adult equivalent of making mud pies.
