I've got a WACOM Bamboo and a Bamboo paper for notes on an iPad. It's great to have notes in one place and backed up automatically. I've got a load of scrap paper held together with a fold back clip. It's great having the notes in one place and backed up automatically Where does it get backed up Tim, in one of these? (I did go for a luxury 80s briefcase rather than an animal skin one!) The backup is really useful. I've got the app on my phone as well, so if I need to check something / get some quick info, which is often needed at the weekend, I've got all my notes quickly available

I have an iphone 12 Pro which has a great camera. I tend to change my phone every 3 to 4 years, which after trade in works out around £25/mth. Given everything I use it for, that is pretty good value and I don't resent the cost to change. In the past I have become irritated when the phone gets to 3 or 4 years old and no longer works as quickly or seamlessly. I don't know if that will change after the Court case when Apple were chastised for having software updates that slowed down older phones - I probably have at least 2 years until I find out.
I recently saw the i-phone 12 (not the pro) advertised for around £625 and it would be more than capable of doing anything you required.

The interesting thing about the briefcase in that photo is that it is almost identical to the one my brother gave me as a 21st birthday present, which I still have and occasionally use, over 40 years later

There's very little market for a phone that only makes calls. You might be better looking at a DORO phone if that's what you need. Amazon have a category called 'Senior Mobile Phones'....that's where the DORO phones are (£25) and you're right, I think that's where Mike should be looking. My mother has a DORO and finds it hilarious when it rings and all her friends pull out the same phone. Because of our defence contracts we all have to have iPhones running the latest OS. They stop working if there is a new software update and you don’t install it. Similarly none of the laptops will accept flash drives.

^ I got my mum a Doro a few months ago when her old phone packed up, but I customised the ringtone first before I gave it to her and transferred the SIM across

(Well, a little bit anyway). Ours are Samsungs, but if an update is missed - nada. Likewise our new computers; they will accept flash drives, but you can't alter any of the information on one and save it on the drive, or anywhere else, without special permission.

I know this thread is primarily based on iPhones being the best phone to have but I moved to android at my last upgrade going from an iPhone SE to a Samsung A50 and I'm loathe to go back. When I originally moved to iphone it was a game changer compared to android but that really doesn't seem the case now and the A50 has been pretty much faultless with the only slight issue being that the USB C socket is a bit dodgy as it's got a bit too much pocket lint but then my last iPhone had the same issue. It's now 2 years old and Vodafone have just notified me I can upgrade but tbh I might just stick to this handset and go sim only for now.

I helped my mother to replace her ancient Samsung Galaxy with a new one over Easter - she now has an A52 I think - it was whatever Which? recommended from the Samsung range in the circa £300 range and is 5G enabled, which given how long my mother keeps her phones seemed sensible forward-planning.
Having played around with it to set it up, Android does seem not vastly different from IOS but I'm not clear how it might be significantly better. Strikes me as little benefit in changing from the known path (be that from Android to IOS or IOS to Android).

I ditched Apple when they added "features" to the OS that drove me mad and couldn't be disabled - one was suggested apps in the Dock which kept moving the dock icons just as I clicked on something so I ended up with the wrong app open.
Android is a lot more customisable to one's personal taste.

I don’t think there’s much difference, I just find the notifications better from Android and the navigation more straightforward.

I dare say it is, once you get used to it. I just can't be bothered - my work phone is an iphone and my wife has iPhones for personal and work too, so just easier to have all the same chargers and whatnot.

We’ve got all our photos and a fair number of files/PDF documents in the iCloud (backed up onto an external drive as well) and shared across a couple of iPhones and iPads plus two Watches and set of AirPod Pros. Sounds like an Apple Fanboy, but it’s more about convenience and liking the kit, but it means changing feels like too much hassle and would be very expensive. I did have a Samsung work phone until 2 years ago and didn’t prefer the OS, but that could have been because I’m so used to Apple.

OK, I spoke too soon. I need a new phone. I've been having some heart issues of late (repeat of the arrhythmia and racing heart, that I first had about 5 years ago) and the doctor suggested I get a iwatch as they can capture ECG's if I get an attack and also monitor your heart rate 24/7. Great. A Fitbit Sense does the same, but having read about both, the iwatch seems to be the better tool. So, I ordered a basic iwatch 6 (as that is the only model that does the ECG's) and it arrived today. I checked what version of iOS I needed and it said it would work with the 12.5 I'm running. But now it won't pair as the iOS has to be running on a phone newer than an iPhone 6s for some reason only known to apple. Sorry bit of a rant, but basically it looks like I need a new phone. Is a 2nd generation iPhone SE (which basically seems to be an iPhone 6/s case - same screen - with much better innards) a good option? The 11 is bigger and has a bigger screen, but I get on OK with the 6 and the 11 is £200 more cash than the SE. I'm not even going to look at the new 12.... Thoughts please gentlemen.

If you’re not bothered about the camera, are happy with the size of your 6 and the quality of the screen, an SE will be fine.
A 12 Mini is a bit smaller, although it has a larger screen and much better camera, but is about £300 more I think.

If you’re not bothered about the camera... I do take quite a lot of photos, and I've read that the 11 camera really is way better than the SE. Not sure it's £200 better in my mind though. As a short term bodge, I'm going to try and pair the iwatch with Mrs PG's iPhone 8 to see if that works to get it started as a useful thing. Then I can think about the new phone at a more leisurely pace.
