So my iPhone 7 has been with me since they were launched. It’s on its second screen and that has developed a crack. Then on Saturday I dropped it and the screen is now displaying oddly in line with a hardware fault. I’m loathe to spend £1k on an iPhone 11 12 as functionally it does nothing more I require so the options are:
Buy an iPhone 8 refreshed (they do everything I need and have wireless charging)
or
Another screen for the iPhone 7
Before anyone says get a not-an-iPhone, I’ll advise you in advance that you’re wasting your time.

I've got an iPhone XR (I think). I couldn't believe how big it was at first but I found my old 8 (maybe) in a drawer last week and its tiny.
Mrs Tim's 7 died recently and she got a good deal from EE for an XR - something like £26/month with loads of data, calls, etc.

Aren’t we up to iPhone 12 now? I’m on an 11 and I’ve had it about two years. I probably would get a more recent model as I use the phone so much it seems worth the investment.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my 8 to a large 12 if I can find a good deal but like you spending a grand on a phone does seem daft. The cameras are rather amazing on the new iphones though.

I'd replace it. iPhone 8 is the last one with the fingerprint scanner before they moved to Face ID (which I hate), so it shouldn't be too different from the 7.
Also, Apple has the nasty habit of rendering old phones obsolete by disallowing new software updates on them.

I'd buy a new one in your position.
I've got an X (personal) and XS (work) which I've had for about 2.5 years. They both work fine, battery life is good and other than the camera I can't see a huge benefit from upgrading to a 12 so I'm going to wait for the next one.

Mine (turns out its an 11 rather than an XR) has a dual sim so no faffing about with 2 phones, although I've lost that 'international man of mystery' from having 2 Ed, I'd check the size of these things before choosing the large version if I were you.

The 8 has a 4.7" screen and the 12 has a 6.1" screen which is bigger than the 8 Plus.

I was the same about phones - couldn't see the point in spending a small fortune on something so ostensibly similar but then realised that it is, rightly or wrongly, one of the things I use most and therefore if I am going to spend money on anything it should be that. So when my 7 got to the point of replacement in Dec 2019, I went for the then latest 11. Not the Pro version - just the ordinary 11 but I've been perfectly happy with it. I also have an X of some sort as my work mobile. Likewise my wife who had an 8 until recently and now has a 12 Pro - made sense for her. She uses it all the time and likes taking photos. In your position, I'd probably get a 12. Except that I wouldn't because I don't like the throw-back squared-off design - the rounded edges of the 6-11 series are much more ergonomically pleasing (IMHO).

I'd vote replace as well. I have an 8 Plus as my work phone and I quite like it.

I was given a new iPhone SE with this job and it seems pretty powerful and not too big. They go for £400 on the Apple site so their an option if you don't want to spend a grand.
I love my iPad but I have to say the iPhone OS isn't a patch on Android. I much prefer my Samsung but as you say that's no interest to you.

I've just bought a Galaxy Tab S7+ to compliment my S21 Ultra. It's amazing and I love it for work stuff with the keyboard attached. I made the jump from iOS to Android a few years ago and am pleased I did - but understand it isn't for everyone though.

Might have to check out the new 12 plus and see how big they are.

The 12/12 Pro has a 6.1" screen vs 5.5" on the 8 Plus and is smaller/lighter. Moving up to the Pro Max (name changed from Plus to Max) gives you a 6.7" screen and it's the pretty much the same size as the 8 Plus. Comparison here: www.apple.com/uk/iphone/compare/?device1=iphone12promax&device2=iphone12pro&device3=iphone8plusIf I was buying a new phone now, it would be a 12 Pro.

Given this would be the third screen I'd recommend a screen protector!!
I would either 1. Stick with it (£60 for a new screen) and eek out as much as possible. 2. Go for a 12 and keep it a while
I wouldn't go for a refreshed 8 because they'll likely soon be in the sights for planned obsolescence.

It's always had a screen protector. I am evidently more violent than the rest of you It's currently having a £40 all-in screen fitment but it may be that is in preparation to be handed over to my daughter (sons are all vehemently anti-Apple) when I change. 12 Mini is my current favourite if I was buying new but a used or boxed-old-stock model would suit. I'm trying to avoid using a phone as the main photo machine as I'm notoriously bad at managing phone photos but really diligent at managing camera photos. Go figure

Go figure In a previous job in my occasional role of head of IT I was responsible for mobile phone contracts. When one of the estate tradesmen needed a new phone and was demanding the latest iPhone I got him a JCB phone instead My thinking, and the reason I gave him, was that when he was next unblocking a toilet and the phone slipped out of his breast pocket the JCB phone would either remain buoyant or was at the very least waterproof whereas the cost of replacing the non buoyant/waterproof iPhone would come out of his wages. Before I gave him the phone I did drop it a few times and it bounced....... You probably need something like that.

I don't really feel I can comment on this thread, as I'm still rocking an iPhone 6, running IOS 12.5. It complements my stone hammers and flints that I use to kill my food. It has had a screen and protection case on from new, which might explain its longevity.

1. Is it possible to run older iphonea on other OS?
2. I am still looking for a simple mobile phone, minus the internet, camera and other stuff I have zero use for, are any around? I search but every time it comes back with contract options. I asked for a simple phone, not a simple contract which is anything but.
4. The idea is to look into the obvious service provider on a cheap contract to use the bleeping thing as a phone rather than play music or go on line.

The real benefit for me is having multiple notebooks all in one place and stored in folders, it's so easy to edit your notes as well / move chunks of text around plus being able to search for key words saves a lot of time. It's great importing PDFs/Word docs in and being able to make notes on them as well, I'm doing a lot of interviewing at the moment and it's so much better than pieces of paper. As I travel several times a week, it means I'm lugging a lot less around as I don't need any files/notebooks and if I know I'm not going to be at a desk for any period of time, I just take my iPad and use that for emails / accessing files through OneDrive etc so no laptop to carry.

I've got a WACOM Bamboo and a Bamboo paper for notes on an iPad. It's great to have notes in one place and backed up automatically.

You can buy a basic sim free phone from Amazon starting at £11.50. You'll be able to get a cheap PAYG SIM card if you haven't got one already.

There's very little market for a phone that only makes calls. You might be better looking at a DORO phone if that's what you need.

Amazon have a category called 'Senior Mobile Phones'....that's where the DORO phones are (£25) and you're right, I think that's where Mike should be looking.
