Is the Ford Transit the only van sold under a single name? The reason I ask, I followed what I thought was a Fiat Doblo the other day and it had a Mercedes badge on the back. Then, today I saw a Renault Traffic/Vauxhall Vivaro and it had a Fiat badge on it and you can also get a Mitsubishi truck with a Fiat badge - are the source of all commercial vehicles now?

Great Wall Steed?
i get your point though. Quite a few manufacturers are doing his in cars as well. My colleague just got a Mercedes A class and found it had a Renault engine!

The Mercedes Citan is a Kangoo, I believe the new Vito is based on the Renault Trafic/Vauxhall Vivaro/Fiat Talento.
I think that the Transit is the Transit and nothing else.

The Mercedes Citan is a Kangoo, Is that not related to a Doblo at all? The look similar to say the least.

I would have put money on the Mercedes being a Doblo. Does Ford do any platform sharing in commercial?

I would have put money on the Mercedes being a Doblo. Does Ford do any platform sharing in commercial? Without knowing for certain, I'd take a guess at "no". I suppose they don't need the economies of scale of platform sharing due to having such a hefty chunk of the market? Mercedes shares the Sprinter with VW and, at least in the previous gen Sprinter, an American company (Dodge?)

Mercedes vans are sold as Chrysler in North America.

Mercedes vans are sold as Chrysler in North America. From Wikipedia The first generation (VA Chassis) North American Sprinter was launched in 2001 in the U.S. and was originally branded as a Freightliner. Units sold to the rest of North America were badged as Mercedes-Benz until 2003 when they received Dodge branding. Units in the United States and Canada, but not in Mexico, could be purchased as a Dodge or Freightliner from 2003. I recall seeing them with a Dodge grille.

The Incestuous World Of Vans.
Is that the X rated follow up to the Cars movie franchise?

What baffles me is BMW not wanting a piece of the commercial vehicle pie.

They're too sniffy for that. Audi too.
Actually it seems that Mercedes is the outlier in having a commercial vehicle division.

VAG have VW commercial vehicles, no need for an Audi branded one, MAN is in the VW group as well as is that well know German brand Scania. Mercedes vans are generally no better than anything else as far as I know and their lorries are towards the lower end of the market (price and quality) just above DAF, MAN and Volvo are nicer trucks.

I seem to recall Ford Trucks were rebranded Freightliner in some markets. The old Ford Cargo springs to mind before they became the IVECO Eurocargo.

The Sprinter was a Freightliner in the US at some point. Not sure on the Iveco/Ford Cargo.
There are van versions of the MINI so perhaps that's as far as BMW want to tread. For now.
