By some of BMW’s recent efforts that’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been…
It’s certainly distinctive and different.

Real or render?
I note it has the single piece grille like the LCI 5er

It’s messy around the back, but a lot better than most recent BMWs and the arches are more M2 than M240i.
I quite like it and really like the 40i xdrive powertrain in a small coupe.

That's not real is it, the grille is far too normal to be an upcoming BMW product.

Rear end reminds me of the Mk5 Escort.
Is this RWD or FWD? I've lost track nowadays.

If those photos are to be believed, that's surprisingly "normal" for a recent BMW. How did that sneak through the uglification process?

The new M2 will become the M car of choice instead of the M3 and M4 if looks have anything to do with it. It still has the Hofmeister kink and the front end looks OK by recent standards.

Nice Grille, nice colour and I bet the interior will be a big step up but thats about as positive as I can be. The body still looks awfully slab sided meaning anything not running on 20" wheels will look pony. But it bodes well for the M2. Lets hope they don't have the genius idea of slapping the gob from the M3/M4 onto the M2 just to spite us.

For a BMW, it looks surprisingly smart.

I really don't like the rear, but it's nowhere near as bad as the 4 coupe thankfully, so I could probably live with it as I do like the rest, especially the 374hp 6 cylinder engine with xDrive. At £45k, so let's say £50k less a bit of discount, I don't think it's too expensive as that's still £10k less than an A45S and the new RS3 will be a £60k car I'm sure.
If I didn't need a 2nd car with adult sized rear seats, I'd seriously look at one to replace the Golf.

With the bonnet bulge and the wider arches, this surely can't be how the base car will look. Perhaps the M240i is going to share the bodywork with the new M2. It might be the same price as a base Cayman but its got 4 seats and a decent sized boot which makes it much more practical for a whole shed load of potential buyers.

It's on the configurator, the base model does get the wider arches and bonnet bulge plus proper round exhausts. I've specced up an M240i, £52,740. A similar spec 220i would be £44,175. I didn't spec the 'illuminated M accents', which look awful from the graphics.

I think the rear would be improved a bit if you ditched the smoked light lenses

It looks needlessly aggressive, but compared to the 4 Series it's actually rather alright.
Bet it'll be a cracker to drive though.

I quite like it. It doesn't offend like some of BMW's recent offerings, which is perhaps not a ringing endorsement. I like the fact that it looks different compared to other BMW's, and doesn't look like a shrunken 4. Keeping the M240i RWD would have created some distance between it and the M440i. Plus, the concept of a relatively compact, six-cylinder rear drive coupe would have been retained. Like the 4, the four-pot 230i gets much better exhaust exits compared to the M240i. Nice round and silver tips on the 230i, it isn't rocket science.
