Having had some very bad experiences with local garages, is there a down side to starting a blog on the whole thing?
Sometimes I see it as pointless and sometimes I want to use a media to rip the shit out of the worst offenders.
I know they cannot cry about my experience and my thoughts on the subject but what are the downsides, apart from every garage in the area blanking me?

If it makes you feel better, but I wouldn't mention any by name.

You could leave yourself open to being taken to court for publishing articles that those being criticised believe are unfair and harm their business/reputation. Definitely worth getting some legal advice if you intend to take this up

Legal advice is not on the horizon for financial reasons. Sick of being kicked all over the map tbh, not much in the way of help from the good garage scheme either.

To me the big downside is that it is very unlikely to be effective. Google is a big thing and there’s a strong chance that your blog won’t even appear in the first five pages of a search. If you did manage to be effective you’d probably get some cease and desist letter that you’d then have to work out how to react to. if you have had some truly bad service then the small claims court might be a better option.

Much as I can fully understand the desire to share the burden of your experience, I think Chris is right here and you could just be opening up a whole world of trouble if you go public with this. Maybe share quietly around a few fellow classic VW owners and move on.

Don’t be intimidated. If your reviews are purely factual and accurate you have nothing to fear. They can threaten but if you are just reporting facts they have no case to go after you, no matter what they may threaten.

Facts are that they booked my car in for one full day, stripped it down and left it in a corner for seven weeks. They did a service the year before and the guy who assessed the car the car after the return pointed out that the condenser was duff and should have been replace, as should the points. He put those points in before I came here so the last points and plugs change was six years ago. These things contributed to the current situation. The oil is also probably original, The last garage went to the extreme of slopping a little fresh oil on the top of the old and then fitted two new wiper blades and ticked a load of boxes on an MOT form. £75. £700 from the first garage who fed me a load of manure and cause me extra expense and difficulty in getting groceries. The excuse I got for each new extension from the first garage was, "I haven't got round to it yet, stop bothering me".
Griff marks all components he changes so he knew he had fitted those items.
The good garage scheme could not give a shit.

I think it depends on your intended purpose of writing. Is it just to rant and get things off your chest? Or do you actually want it to be seen and action to be taken? Each requires a different approach.

Having thunked on it a bit and questioned my own motive, anything that gets one or more people to go somewhere else would be a start. Factual and losing the hysteria many sites go for.
I suppose I want it to hurt those involved, even if only a little so they know we the customer can get back at them.

Sadly I find it takes a social media campaign to get results these days. My mother in law had problems with her Wren kitchen installation and was getting nowhere so some determined tweeting and I had an area manager, a new installation team and a cheque for compensation sorted. Similarly with my Sainsbury’s bank credit card I was getting pissed about by the contact centre so a bit of tweeting about how crap they are and I had a phone call, an apology and £100 paid into my current account.
