So having had multiple Corollas, Camrys and Kias, I got a Hyundai Elantra this week. Interested to see what it’s like in comparison to the Kia. About 700 miles of driving should give me a decent impression.

About 200 miles in and impressions are as follows. It’s decent, possibly prefer it to the Corolla as the engine is nicer. The lane assist is good, not violent but doesn’t have adaptive cruise control. It also has a weird way of setting the cruise- there’s no obvious way of doing the normal cancel and resume that every other car I’ve driven has. CarPlay doesn’t seem to work through the usb- I prefer using it this way as it means I don’t have to delete my Bluetooth from the car when I return it. Handles well and is quiet inside too. Happy enough with it for now.

I have to be honest here. I have absolutely no idea what a Hyundai Elantra even looks like.
Hiring lots of cars in the US, have you had the "I've lost my car" experience I did yet? I parked up my non-descript beigy-gold saloon hire car in a massive mall car park and then could not actually remember what it was when I came out. I had to walk about plipping the keys until I got close enough to see the indicators flashing.

+1 I don't want to spoil my immaculate browsing history by looking it up either!

Just looked one up. “Some ‘car’” in a Clarksonesque voice, indicating one buys them by weight and/ or size as opposed for any technical, engineering or aesthetic reason.

I have driven so many in the past year especially that it’s only the different ones that I post now. And different might mean it’s another brand, but they are very much the same. It kind of reminds me why I skipped so many compact group tests when I subscribed to Autocar.

I’m not sure, I think it is. It’s got 6300 miles on it (5700 before I got in on Wednesday) and I haven’t seen or noticed many like it yet. It’s registered this year so very possibly.

Well, the latest Elantra is quite the looker, IMO

From that angle, it looks even better than the original Merc CLS

Well, the latest Elantra is quite the looker, IMO That’s a very dry sense of humour you have there, Ben. Bloody hell that’s awful.

Apart from the detail design of the grille, I quite like it.... not that I'd buy one as it's not an estate or "square-backed" SUV/MPV

This is the same as the one I had. I noticed the v shape in the door immediately.
I handed it back yesterday, impressions after a few hundred more miles, it was ok to drive, had reasonable acceleration in sport mode, the self centering lane assist was weird. Despite my first impressions, I’m not sure I really liked it. It felt like I was fighting the car to turn sometimes, way too much resistance, and at other times, it worked well. I still couldn’t connect to the CarPlay by plugging in. I prefer it that way as it means I don’t have to remove my phone details from the car when I return it. The Bluetooth connection dropped on more than one occasion, but stayed connected at the same time- in other words, the map disappeared from the screen but the phone kept playing whatever I was listening to.
Overall, I’d say as basic cars go and as rental cars go, Hyundai, like Kia, have gone from my reaction being “ugh” to “ok”. That’s a good thing I suppose!
One more thing, the inside door handles were in the wrong place. They were way too low on the door and not where they tend to be on every other car. Strange complaint but the ergonomics were way off and I didn’t like that.

How the fuck did that ever get signed off? Because they saw the hideousness coming from Germany and thought "this'll do"?
