I encountered an acquaintance at the local car wash in Suffolk yesterday. He was there in an XC90 T8 family bus but told me he'd just sold an F-Type S coupe after running it for a year and broke even on it. More to the point he used to have a very smart campervan based on a Mercedes V-Class and he told me they flogged that on after three years for a profit! He used to work for Marshalls, the dealership chain, and confirmed that prices for pretty much everything have gone up, but prices are anything desirable or lifestyle-y have just gone nuts.

Campers are ridiculous money for obvious reasons but align that to the total lack of commercial vehicles available on which they are based and its no great surprise.

The first 992 gt3 has appeared for sale, bearing in mind they always command a premium new ,but at a list base price of 125k the seller is very optimistic pricing it at £275k .

Perhaps we are at or near the top of the price spike. My friend who is still looking for a 911 (preferably 991.1 GTS but would also take a well specced S) has just texted me to say that two cars he had looked at have just come down £1,000 in price. They are still massively expensive for 6/7 year old cars but here's hoping the madness has at least been halted.

I reckon that with inflation rising, people are suddenly aware that everyday stuff is costing more and more. So money for luxuries - like a newer car will get squeezed.

I hope it lasts a bit longer because I'm shortly going to get rid of the Micra with no plans to replace it!

I've been looking at a number of cars and not much is selling at the moment from what I've seen. M2 Comps for example seem to have come down about 5-10% in the last few months.

Most of my Autotrader garage is turning over fairly quickly, but I've definitely seen the c20% premium drop by at least half in a lot of cases.

For interest I re-ran the motorway.co.uk valuation on our Mini. It's gone down 10% from 6 months ago. Still a good valuation after nearly 3 year's ownership but not the "wow that's almost what we paid for it" of last year.

Demand naturally wanes at this time of year which may be part of it. But I do suspect that the cost of living crisis that is being reported on in the news everyday is leading to some people tightening their belts and holding on in case things become even more uncomfortable financially if, for example, their mortgage goes up if Bank of England ups their interest rate or the Russians really turn off the gas taps.

As detailed elsewhere I've been keeping an eye on GT86 and BRZ prices for some months now, and there are signs of softening. 2020 cars that were advertised at £30k+ (list was around £29k) are down to around £28k, and there are a few early facelift (November 2016 onwards) cars in the £17k bracket. Still high, but going the right way.

Wish I'd held off a bit longer to change the mighty Skoda now!

I think prices are slightly softening as well. XFR values were very high for a time, slightly lower now, with R-S still getting some silly asking prices. With all that's been going on I did consider selling the XFR, wondering if I really needed a 4 door nigh on 2 tonne saloon if single, but driving both Porsche and XFR recently the XFR is a vastly more capable machine for what I mostly use them for. The Boxster is no fun in dark and rain on even some of the twisty A-roads around here (let alone the rest...) on bad surfaces, the headlights are ropey and driving is a lot of effort, plus you also breach grip at will in the XFR and not in the Porsche. If I sell one, it will be the Porsche (where values still seem as strong as ever) but I'll hopefully keep both. Nice to have some rainy day funds anyway as I have zero savings otherwise!

I’m starting to look at used cars and have noticed the following here in Ireland:
- everything is more expensive, doesn’t matter what the brand is - there are still bargains to be had if you’re willing to look - road tax prices are way better here now that they’ve properly adopted the co2 system. I’m looking at cars that have the same engine as I’ve previously owned in other vehicles and the tax is less than half what it was. - some cars are way more expensive in Ireland than the USA. My X5 for example, there’s one that’s almost identical here and it’s twice as expensive as mine, with higher mileage too. -I still don’t know what to buy.

I think you need to start the search by deciding what you really want and then just try to find the best one at the best price. Deep down you will know what you want before you start to cloud it with issues such as cost, mpg, road tax etc etc

I’m looking at estates at the moment and have noticed there’s a few that are well specced and aren’t breaking the bank. I’m in a position where I have to buy a car now, but can’t get a loan as I’m not earning for a few more weeks, yet need something decent enough that I can drive now and then change in about 2 years. I’ve seen a few Mondeo’s that tick all the boxes and have always liked how Fords drive so am tempted. I have cash so can pay outright for one if I find the right one. We would like to get a 7 seater as we’ve 3 teenagers and 2 dogs and we are often in the car at the same time, but I might just wait until getting one of them so that we can get a better option than what’s currently in our price range. I’m not concerned about performance for now.
