Shame you had a bit of a wasted day. Where I live I come to the M25 at the J9 (one on from Redhill exiting from the A24) and it really is a real pig of a road. Widening it from 3 to 4 lanes has made bugger all difference as so many drivers refuse to go any further left than lane 3 that it still mostly runs as a 2 lane motorway.
Anyway looking at the two you've just posted the blue 1931 Alvis would be my preference mainly because I prefer the drop top looks. The red one is nice too but you could again have the headroom issue. You should of stopped growing at 5'7" like I did!

Oh I don't consider it wasted. I saw two cars which easily could have been 'the one's, but were just not right. No panic to buy a car this week, so the search goes on.

The Alvis obviously got under your skin a bit. I do like the blue one.

No never time wasted. I like an Alvis but I find that red one looks a little bit like an old taxi.

I have a picture of me in one of Richard Stote's Avis (not sure which one) He took me out it it and showed me his collection when I was about 14. He lives one village over from where I grew up and frequented my Mum's Post Office. (As did an editor of old old top gear, who took me out in an NSX)
I think Richard has something to do with Red Triangle these days?

They look to fit the bill but what are they like with he hood up? Not that it will be a real problem when you pick and choose when to drive the beast.

Deal done. Picking up the Alvis on Saturday! Which one? The one you test drove (but didn't fit in?) or one of the other two you linked to?

It is the one I didn't fit in. I have found someone who can alter the seat.
It is a very well-known and important car in Alvis history, being one of three or four remaining in the world and by far the best and most original example. There are several pages devoted to it in one of the main books on Alvis cars. The body construction is to a design by Weymann, being fabric stretched over a wooden frame. Lightweight, strong and rattle-free compared to the metal bodies.

Sounds excellent. Body by Weymann, same company as MCW who made coach bodies in later years?

Enjoy it.
I presume that altering the seat does not "damage" the originality / provenance of the car?

Enjoy it. I presume that altering the seat does not "damage" the originality / provenance of the car? Unless you literally preserved the car in an airtight vault from new, some PHP will always find something wrong with it.

Unless you literally preserved the car in an airtight vault from new, some PHP will always find something wrong with it. Indeed. The front seat was restored in the 1990s and the, then, owner was quite short, so it is possible he had it built up a bit. The rest of the interior is original. The car has only had four owners from new, which is quite rare for a 94 year old car.

94 year old car. The mind boggles at that.
I'm sure it will bring you many years of pleasure.

So while the rest of us watch the in rear view mirror for approaching Audis, you’ll be on the lookout for Messerschmitts… Sounds great anyway, assuming you don’t end up in the Channel it’ll be fascinating to see the pics.

Of course, back in the day, it would have been an Alvis sports saloon, driven by a Bright Young Thing, looming in the rear view mirror of the Austin and Morris drivers.

^ Trailer or are you going to hunch up and drive it back? Hunch up and drive back. I shall find a motorway avoidance route from Redhill towards Reading area, then up through Theale, Pangbourne over the downs towards Wantage, Kingston Bagpipes, Witney, Chippy and home.

Aaaarrgh, if you'd been driving that way on Saturday I'd have tried to get out and see you on part of the route. As it is, I shall be at work on Friday :-(
Mind you, I don't envy you driving an old car on a non-motorway route from Redhill to Reading, let alone any further. Good luck and have a safe journey

Well, we got back without incident. Compared to the Standard, the Alvis is a real speed machine and it will cruise at 55 MPH all day. Hills are no problem at all. It is easier to get used to a centre throttle than you might think and most of my changes up and down the crash box were completed without a crunch.
