I made a real senior moment error last night, I was making supper, took the steamed spud out of the microwave and just did not put the rest of the meal in before setting it to five minutes (Full power) and watching something non memorable on the idiot box. A while later I noticed the distinct smell of burned plastic.
I am going obviously, to have to replace the unit.
What is the best brand and model, if anyone has knowledge of these things.
I had a Matusi from 1986 that lasted until 2014 when Sara killed it because 'I just wanted a new one'.
No idea what the standards are like but the cheep George item I just killed was on it's deathbed anyway after two years.
I would really appreciate a few pointers before I have to eat supper raw.

Well, in the past, Samsung had a good reputation. When we had our first child and "needed" a microwave, that's what I bought. Nice and simple with a dial for power and another for the timer. That was in 1991 and it's still going strong with that same daughter using it, 30 years later ! She and her ex bought us a new one a few years back which lasted under a year and was replaced under warranty (can't remember the brand, but the replacement was Sharp which we still have and use almost daily). After a while with her new partner, their microwave expired and she asked if we still had our original one (which we did, pressed back into service when the gifted one broke whilst we waited for a replacement).
I believe that Sharp microwaves are good... my parents had an expensive Panasonic one which failed after a few years (outside of warranty) then they got a Proline (Comet's own-brand) cheap one which is still going strong many years later.
TBH these days, I tend to buy cheap appliances on the basis that they don't last very long and are generally unrepairable (due to difficulties in getting spares) or more expensive to repair than buying a replacement item new.
Do you want complicated programming functions, or just the basics such as power lever and duration?

I need very little but it being used every day has to be reliable and tough. The George from Hasda be was cheap but bloody pathetic as far as durability is concerned.

I seem to have had fairly good fortune with a very basic one I bought from Tesco in 2008 for at most £20. It's still going strong.
Before that, I was given a hand-me-down microwave by my Mum when I rented a bedsit in Bristol in 1991. That one lasted until 2008 and was well over 20 years old.
Both models are/were very simple, just a dial for the time and a dial for the power. That's all the complexity I need!

Basic models will generally be fine. It's the ones that focus on style other substance you want to avoid, eg our Swan retro duck egg one which my wife insisted upon as it went with our kettle and bread bin. Less than 2 years later the inside had corroded so much I took it to the dump and bought a much bigger Kenwood microwave/oven/grill for 100 sheets in the January sales from Currys. Seems pretty good so far but the wife still moans it's not the right colour 🙄
