RIP my favourite Royal if there can be such a thing. Made the role of consort his own at the same time as making sure he was never defined as just the Queen’s husband.

Hardly a big surprise, he's had pretty much his entire lower body in the grave for years now.
I reckon Liz will follow in a few months and then the power struggle between Charlie Boy and Bill will begin in earnest.

Not entirely unexpected but still a bit of a surprise.

RIP. Not a surprise, but still a shame and a significant loss of someone from the pre-woke generation. Some younger members of the Royal Family could learn a thing or two from him in about having a sense of duty and behaving in way which is fitting to their position in society.

Sad that old Zorba didn’t get his 100 up but a life well lived.

Good time to remind myself that when HMQ and the Duke visited Slovakia the British embassy had to make sure the Slovak premier didn’t invite Philip on a bear hunt (a great honour) because he’d have instantly said “yes” and the fallout in the UK would’ve been horrendous.

I did always admire his approach, but he would not have wanted a fuss to be made so I shall respect that by not making one!

RIP the Duke of Edinburgh. Always a character. The Queen will feel a massive loss from the loss of a lifelong partner and I hope she gets the support she deserves through this.

The least politically correct Royal, but still dignified and all the better for it IMO. RIP.

^, all of these in spades. Dignified and little comment but, always, stuffed full of not being pc.

BBC has gone completely OTT, cancelling all TV and radio shows until tomorrow. Republicans will be seething.
Anyway, The Masters on Sky it is then..

It's a real shame he didn't make his 100.
He led a pretty amazing life really. A refugee when Greece became a republic; a decorated naval officer; a constant support by the side of the Queen all these years; way ahead of the pack in terms of environmental and conservation issues; a seemingly dry yet wicked sense of humour; and I don't think he ever took himself too seriously either. RIP old boy. We shall not see your like again.

It is a shame he didn't make it to 100 but I dont think he'll feel he had a bad life and certainly served this country well almost to the end. The Queen's had a few tough moments over the years, usually due to the behaviour of her children, but he's helped steer her through the lot of it and, for the most part, has avoided controversy. I don't think the Queen will go shortly after but it really will focus our minds on her mortality and I hope she has the support she needs. I can see William stepping up to help her a lot more.

My father knew him through various Naval associations (apparently the Duke's reputation for being occasionally wince-makingly direct was entirely merited), but it will be a regret of mine that I never met him myself. I did see him in person a few times at Royal Ascot, and once when he and his wife visited my school, but never to meet or speak to.
On that latter note, I noticed to my amusement and general sense of vindication that my school was used to stand in for Kensington Palace in various episodes of The Crown (which we recently finally got around to watching). The vindication because I remember once being dragged around some palace or other (possibly Hampton Court) with my wife and her getting thoroughly irritated with my general lack of enthusiasm, to which I responded that it was difficult to be enthusiastic about wandering around inside something that closely resembled my school (think lots of dark wood panelling and enormous windows that require a very long wooden pole with a hook on the end to open or close). She clearly thought I was being pretentious and talking nonsense.

We have 4 main BBC channels via Freeview (1,2, Scotland and Alba) and EVERY one of them was showing exactly the same programming, seemingly for hours! Absolutely right and proper to have the usual tribute programme, or programmes in this case, but every channel? Get a grip people! And on every bloody news channel, talking head show etc etc etc. Jeez .. .. ..

They do not know how to cover a subject without tearing the arse out of it, I take it this is mostly brown nosing.

I haven't watched either apart from waiting for the main news delivery but looking at the schedule it was all over the place and in the case of the beeb, most of the channels simultaneously. Something I get annoyed at the beeb for doing with some other programs.
