Who else on the forum pays more in tax than insurance??? I now do, for both cars - on the Boxster tax is almost twice the annual insurance amount!!!!
For 2 sporty cars with nearly 800bhp between them, fully comp, with European cover and a jonny foreigner on the policies as well (who does - unlike me - have recent claims and points) that has to be somewhat shocking surely? Mainly in how much I pay - on top of all the tax on fuel - for daring to own (and barely use) cars with big engines, but which put out less NOX than some modern small diesel engines.....

On the Jag I definitely pay more in tax than insurance.
Not based on milers driven at all, Vehicle Licence Tax is nothing but an ownership tax. It's got piss all to do with pollution, it's just presented that way to try and con some people.

I think I do. My insurance was just under £400 from memory and I think my tax is £375. Obviously there’s then all the tax on fuel that rubs into the thousands.

Not me.
VED on the 440i is £205 pa whereas insurance is around £500.
Similarly, VED on the Fiat is zero, whereas insurance is around £160.
The Fiat is very cheap to run, and the BMW is remarkably cheap to run for what is a pretty fast and well-equipped car.

I don't. Total insurance bill last year was just over £1400 vs this years RFL of £980 (both are £155 + £335 for the £40k+ list). That's despite us both having clean licences, long no claims (Lindsay has never had a claim or been caught speeding in 20 years driving) and I don't think we live in a particularly high risk area. It's not the RR driving it up either, as it was £10 cheaper to insure than the 750 was the previous year, the RR was £840 and the Golf £570.

The truck tax is less than the insurance by quite a bit - £265 for the tax and £425 for the insurance.
The Mazda tax is £225, I think and the insurance about £200.

Who is your insurance with, James?
I currently pay about £1500 for my two in insurance and about £1100 in tax.

I don't think I have ever paid more in VED tax than insurance; I don't have the well paid job that would allow me to do that, even if I wanted to !
The Fiesta is free VED, renewed it at the end of February for 1 March and it's a great feeling to just click on re-taxing without having to hand over any money. The Captur is £20 and the Kuga was £140, registered just before the revised scheme was enforced in 2017... I think it's now gone up to £145 or £150 but as I SORN'd it for 2 months last year, it's not due until the end of May. One criteria that I would use if/when I next change a car would be low-ish VED, I hate handing hundreds of pounds over to government when it can be avoided

Zero VED and insurance is about £200. That will be going up next time though.

All the toys are pre 2006 so c£330 a year each in tax, insurance ranges from £135 for Elan through to c£280 for the 911.
The Yeti is c£140tax and about £250 to insure

With the Zafira the ved is about the same cost as the car!
My insurance for the Etron and 911 was £875. I guess that’s a benefit of being old! Although it probably helps that I’ve never made an insurance claim in 35 years of driving and I’ve only had one three point speeding ticket in that time.

It's not a calculation I want to make, I'll just get angry about how much road tax I've paid compared to the cost of 5 tyres being replaced due to pothole damage and yet a further deterioration in the state of the roads

The roads around my way are in an atrocious state and it pisses me off daily as I slalom my way down what is a fairly major road. Our Council wanted to increase Council Tax this year by 3% and road maintenance was high on the agenda: they were told by Holyrood that if they increased Council Tax they would have their grant from the Scottish Government reduced by more than the additional Council Tax would bring in. The Council are damned if they do and damned if they don't and for probably the first time in my life I have some sympathy for them being held hostage in a Political game due to the Scottish elections.
As for the original question, the road tax for the M5 is £475 and the insurance this year was £440. The Mini and Jag both cost considerably more to insure than they do to tax. In fact the Jag costs me nothing to tax because it is leased and that is built in to the lease.

I started to polish the Golfs summer wheels ready to put them back on the weekend before last and the inside rim on one of the front wheels is slightly buckled. Thankfully as it’s got all seasons on rather than winters, delaying changing shouldn’t be an issue.

The Gorilla is more to tax than insure by over £100; the Mini is only about £30 or something to tax so that's much less than the insurance. My bikes have always been more to insure than tax due to the fact that bike tax is dead cheap.
Talking of insurance this very morning we have received a rebate in the princely sum of £14.30 for a rebate not given on the home insurance policy for the year 21 May 2013 - 20 May 2014. After such an unexpected windfall I'm currently reviewing yacht broker websites......

I worked it out.
4 cars currently on the road (M5 and Fiat both SORN), road tax is £1,210 which includes the supplemental £310 for the 4 series, and insurance is £1,100 (for 5 cars confusingly).
If all 6 were on the road total road tax would be £1,810 and insurance about £1,500.
All this says to me is that the sooner we get road pricing the better - there are only 2 of us to drive these cars so the tax isn't applied fairly (quelle surprise!). Still, I know it's personal choice so I can't complain too loudly.

I pay £330 for tax and £400 for insurance. Not sure how the 330d will pan out, but I expect similar numbers.
