I have just received the brochure and price list by e-mail.
The thing that smacks me firmly in the face is the price - they are going all out on the cost of additional colours, leather and seat upgrades and just about everything else you can think of. I reckon a well specced M3/M4 is going to be c£85K before discount. I also couldn't help notice that on the basic car, before extras, the Government are getting c£14,500 in VAT and first years road tax. Not bad for doing nothing and allowing our roads to disintegrate!

There will be a few diehard BMW fans with a lot of money who will gladly pay the list price but after the initial rush, can't see the customers being there at 85K plus. Give it max 12 months and the 15K deposit contributions will be coming in, 0% finance etc as they need to get the car to around £799 a month to sell any.

The price is only one barrier - the other is that front grill. I saw an M4 at the weekend in what looked like Tanzanite blue and it was much less offensive than the photos I have seen of the lighter coloured cars. It's not a face you could ever love though!

There simply can't be that much more of real cost in this new M3/M4 to the old one. So the price must simply be price gouging by BMW, who seem to think it is better to have a high list price ad offer crazy supported deals than have a sensible price in the first place.
Perhaps they think that if we get used to an £85k M3, EV's for £60-70k will seem "good value"?

I have in the past contemplated the F30 shape M3/4. But I've been paying next to no attention to this new version - it's just not got much appeal.
I read a couple of reviews and it seems to boil down to:
- yeah it's ugly - yeah the interior's a bit ugly - it drives really well - the engine sounds a bit dull.
Since the nth degree of how well a car drives at 10/10th at unachievable speeds is frankly immaterial to my real-life motoring 99% of the time, I chalk that one down as a "not interested".

I am amazed at the differential between loading up a C-class and a 3 series with options. The Merc all-in option for basically everything included is £5k on top of the higher specced AMG line car whereas an M sport 3-er is more than double to add all the options to match.

I saw one advertised at £938 per month, £938 deposit. Or £799.72 per month with a £7100 deposit, 47 months. At least at the moment, the monthlies are in a different ballpark compared to the old one. To be expected given the higher price. But I dunno, to spend that sort of outlay, it would need to be something that sounded amazing and felt really special. It does appear to be an amazing car, way beyond the old car and its competitors. I just couldn't see past a 991.1 at that price. Not a fair comparison but there we go!
All people need to do is wait for the 15k deposit contributions to arrive...

It does seem most reviews are giving the Alfa the nod over the M3 and its where Id be putting my money.

I think a lot of the positive reviews by the youtube brigade are down to the persuasive BMW marketing team. No-one I know who is potentially in the market for an M3 or M4 is excited about them due to the looks. One guy I know who has had plenty of BMW's M products has just traded his M2 Comp for an A45S when I would have had him down as an M4 possible.

I like the idea of an A45S shooting brake thingummy quite a lot, but sadly having been on the configurator, Mercedes only sees fit to sell it in colour schemes with pretty much zero appeal to me.

I saw a pee yellow F82 M4 yesterday and to be honest I'd rather have a new one in a dark colour than the old one in something, er, eye catching.
But in all honesty I'd choose something else entirely if I had that amount to spend on a car.

My friend's wife has had a variety of Cooper S and JCW Minis and he says the A45S is just as pointy and awe inspiring as the Minis in the way it changes direction with complete confidence. He is still running it in but he is very impressed so far.

He is still running it in but he is very impressed so far. It's a car I'd like to have a go in. The first reports / test weren't hugely complementary but I heard Chris Harris talking about it a while back and he said the launch cars were terrible as they were set up for showboating on track, but Mercedes made a number of changes which turned it into a much better road car. The Catchpole video review is very good, as is the recent Evo piece on it up against the 992 Turbo S. My main concern is the seats, as I didn't like them in the E63 I drove a few years ago and our 2nd car needs to be comfortable on long journeys, but I'll only find out if I try one. Then there is the cost, add metallic and voodoo cruise and the list is £59,500 which discounts down to £53,500, but is still quite a lot for a small hatchback. The problem is there isn't much that interests me at the moment, not that holding onto the Golf for another year will be a hardship as I still really enjoy driving it.

Can you get it in a subtle style or are they all Max Power meets Halfords?
It'd be decent enough if you could ditch the dive planes and comedy rear spoiler but if you can't I suspect every journey would attract attention from people trying to race you.

Unfortunately if you want the adaptive dampers, voodoo lights, memory seats and panoramic roof then you have to have it with the Aerodynamic pack. Our R is very low key, but it still attracts a lot of attention and brings out the worst in some people, there are clearly a lot of M140i drivers who feel they need to prove a point.....whatever that is and I guess an A45 could be even worse. The CLA is a bit more subtle and doesn't have a big wing, but it still has the dive planes plus other bits and I do quite like having a small hatchback, the CLA is the same size as a 3 series or the new C class.

For the CLA Shooting Brake, you can get one with the Plus + pack which adds just about every extra apart from the driving assistant and it comes out at just over £60K. When you consider that it is a 4WD 400+ HP estate car with almost every extra, it doesn't appear to be bad value in comparison to other cars on the market with similar performance and you just have to forget it only has 4 cylinders. I think I could live with one in digital white (in other words, silver) with the black/titanium grey seats. I agree with Racing that the exterior colour choice is atrocious and I really don't know what they are playing at. By not offering colours outside red metallic or various shades of white to black they must be turning away lots of customers. It won't make people look at a C Class instead to get a different colour, it will just piss them off and make them look at different manufacturers.

Better than the new Golf R....you can have white, black or blue. So no choice at all for me, it would have to be Blue and it's the one that every other Golf R on the road is wasn't in the top 3 when we bought ours. You can get blue on the CLA saloon, but not the estate for some reason. (I can't bring myself to call them the coupe and shooting brake....) The CLA does look pretty smart, but whilst it's a lot better than the old one, I still don't like the estate (too droopy at the back).
