Has anyone tried it? I'm going for a first session on Thursday as it's meant to be good for lower back pain. Im' quite looking forward to it which is weird as I hate needles but I have a feeling this might do some good - got to be better than necking Ibuprofen.

My dad had it decades ago to try and get him off cigarettes, it didn't work.
My colleague has recently had it to try and help his fertility, he enjoyed the relaxation but it didn't ultimately work for him.

A work colleague had it recently and said it helped - that was for some kind of exercise related injury.

W2.0 has it and swears by it. She gets a gazillion needles inserted in her then they're wired up to some kind of electrical pulse device.
I refuse to have anything to do with it. Good luck - tell us how it goes.

I've never tried it. But I saw a TV documentary several years ago where they put people with really bad arthritis through various alternative treatments and acupuncture gave the best results.
I've used reflexology in the past and it is another treatment that gets scoffed at, but I found it really worked.

I have done it for tennis elbow, and fertility. I now don't have tennis elbow and have a child. I do not necessarily link these things to the acupuncture.
My wife goes once or twice a month and swears by it for mood and pain stuff.

I've had sufficient experience without the "acu" to want to avoid it......

I once went to an osteopath to get my neck crunched, and my back muscles had locked from holding myself oddly. He offered free accupunture, and upon my sceptical response offered to do it on half my back as a test.
Within an hour the side he treated felt great and the other side was still locked in muscle spasm......
I didn't expect it to work, so there must be something in it.

Used one 2 weeks Ago for the first time .
Pain in shoulder went but appeared elsewhere. People say it can easy pain but doesn't solve the actual Issue. I will be going back next week to try again as he did say I might need a couple of treatments.

A lot of shoulder pain is referred pain, from the liver for example. Several alternatives to acupuncture, TENS and Painbegone but they both work on similar lines without the puncture bit. www.amazon.co.uk/Pain-Relief-Pen-Gone/dp/B0056PRXOUwww.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Ddrugstore&field-keywords=tens+machineI had a trial acupuncture with the electrical stimuli added mode by an NHS pain clinic but the doc operating said machine parked it in front of me and did not even plug it in let alone switch it on, I smelled a rat or three. When I cancelled any further treatments the receptionist said, "You are cured then, I'll tell doc bleep you say you are cured". There sure are some muppets in the NHS. How is prodding someone on the back about forty or fifty times going to cure anything?

You made me worry for a second there,a quick google shows shoulder pain can be caused by liver cancer,or various other very nasty liver conditions. Fortunately it is the right shoulder if there is a liver issue, which is not my poorly one.

Not myself, but it's worked well for both my daughters when they were younger. As with any other kind of treatment I would guess a lot depends on the expertise and skills of the person administering it.

I am now punctured. Interesting sensation, I certainly feel a degree of flexibility and the sensation seems to be quite energising. Just thinking about needles makes me shudder so I bravely kept my eyes firmly shut for the duration but going to see how I feel over the next few days.

W2.0 has it and swears by it. She gets a gazillion needles inserted in her then they're wired up to some kind of electrical pulse device. I had similar to this a few times, over 10 years ago, for sports injuries. Didn't seem to make much, if any, difference in my case but the experience itself was perfectly fine. Hope it does you good, it almost certainly won't do any harm.

I've never had proper acupuncture per se (eg where they waffle on about energy flows and "chi") but I have had something called "dry needling" (which appears to be very similar but minus the Chinese mumbo-jumbo) through our Nuffield health providers here at work.
They tap the needles in and then fiddle with them until you wince. Then they leave them until the discomfort passes and then fiddle with them again (and repeat, repeat). Supposedly it works by causing minor wounding via the pricking of the needle which stimulates the body to send extra repair resources to the affected area. Scientifically, that sounds plausible enough. I don't mind the needles and nor do I mind the pain, because you know it is temporary and it is supposed to be doing you good.
I originally was prescribed it in 2010 after I rolled the Z1 and had whiplash and ligament damage in my left arm. It was very effective. I've since also had it for tennis elbow (they put needles in your elbow, forearm, back of hand (between thumb and forefinger) and tricep), and it again worked a treat.
I would certainly recommend it.

The needling releases endorphins which can also be released by conditioned response.

Must be worth a try? I'm a little bit too familiar with Ibuprofen - gel more than pills - for back and neck (and sometimes knee) pain from cycling, I'd be interested to see how you get on.
I know its a big hippy trend - but I also find mindfulness meditation very useful generally, and it relaxes the body enough to help with pain. I do it a little as it was so good for Mrs ALF. Again, no downsides, so why not. That - and plenty of Pilates-style core exercises - certainly helped both of us with all sorts of things.

I've just got back from round two but I won't be going again. I think it does 'something' but it's not enough to overcome the discomfort or thought of the needles. I utterly hate needles - I could never do Heroin. I get a Swedish massage once a week and I think that is better for me in terms of experience and results. The mindfulness trend is just the branding for what people have done for year, that is get a bit of head space. For me that's being sat on the lawnmower for two hours a week as you can barely hold a phone let alone check email.
