G'day,
Griff sorted th timing issues, the 'bits' I changed ere passed as GTG but, I still find that running under load is hesitant. I am wondering if jetting is the issue.
Basically there are flat spots while accelerating and hesitations.
No clue right now, the condenser and points are fine and the timing is now spot on but she really is not a happy old girl even if starting minus choke is easier with the weather improvement.
Anyone got any pointers?

You need a vacuum gauge connected to the car to see what is going on with the air to fuel ratio - that's all an AFR guage is then look up Thunderhead 289 on YouTube who is a carb guru and has several videos on proper carb setup.
I'm out of my depth with carb setups beyond the basics.

Are the carbs original for the car or has someone taken a couple of Beetle carbs and used those. From memory I don't think the old Solex carbs could be changed in any way. It is such a long time since I worked on those carbs I can't really remember how they work. I have the feeling that there was something unusual for the pump jet - maybe something vacuum operated. Anything that works off the vacuum is liable to perishing or cracking and that could be part of the issue.

Modern E10 petrol plays havoc with classic car fuel systems. Perished hoses, disolved solder and porous floats to name but a few. Filling up with the super-dooper expensive stuff will help to avoid this, but you will have to recitfy any problems first.

The carbs are brand noo Webbers, the Solex are irreparable due to age and nil spares. All the hoses are fine being only a few months old which is why I am stumped. Basically I am guessing at incorrect jets in the carbs or they just misrepresented the carbs and they are smaller than stated. Chess anyone?

Webers have countless changeable jets. The main jet has an emulsion tube, air correction jet and the jet itself. You also have a pump jet for when you put your foot down and you will have changeable venturis. You need to find someone who has a stock of spare jets, emulsion tubs etc and know what they are doing. I used to have a big box full of every Weber part available but I gave it away to the guy who bought my race Westfield when I gave up serious competition.

Googling around, there are places like classiccarbs who may be able to help, plus data sheets for the correct jets for Webers on any car they were made for, are also available for a small fee. Have you phoned Grif for advice?
With the issues you have reported about your local garage I wonder if it is something simple such as wrong jets, or even a damaged/missing/incorrect gasket when fitting them. I've only got experience of single carb setup so no idea what horrors can arise when dealing with twins
