That will be a hugely competent dull-a-thon. If it were a footballer it would be Philip Neville.

The standard response for every new VW these days seems to be "bland"

Based on the rest of the range, it would now appear that the Polo may be the best looking VW. I'm not sure if that should be taken as compliment to the Polo or a sad indictment of the rest of the VW range.

I actually like that. There's enough subtle design differences (like the front grille and rear lights) to make it look different from the rest.
As with most VWs the design is evolutionary not revolutionary.

Does look a lot like the Golf, but the interior seems much improved over the last one. Shame they've dropped the 3 door version. I think that only leaves the Fester with a 3 door option in this segment. Wonder how long that'll last?

There has been a definite switch to 5dr in all but the sporty stuff.

Well blow me down, I wasn't expecting it to look like that!
I understand your sentiments Simon, but I imagine the sales figures suggest the buying public won't miss the 3dr as much as you do. I imagine the Golf 8 will also lack a 3dr option. For the odd few that want them, I'd of thought VW would prefer they look at the Scirocco.

Looks OK to me. Not particularly exciting, but there's a lot of ugly around and I'd rather have one of these.
When is the Scirocco being replaced? It's long overdue,

It's ok in a predictable way.

When is the Scirocco being replaced? It's long overdue, With the way the range is going I would say VW's plan is to let it wither and die - why go to the effort of designing a new one these days when all you need do is give your mid-size car a bit of an SUV makeover and hey presto sells more in a week than a Scirocco would sell in a year.

I'm seeing a lot more 'dubbed' Sciroccos about recently...

Give it a year and these new Polos will be scraping around on coilovers or airbags, with the predictable BBS split rim/Bentley/Lambo alloys.

There has been a definite switch to 5dr in all but the sporty stuff. Peugeot have dropped the 208 3dr in all models apart from a special edition with the entry level engines and the GTi versions, the only market for 3dr 'normal' cars is the UK really. I like that Polo, I wouldn't buy one but they know their market. Yep, Clio became 5dr only as it was only the UK who bought 3dr Clio, apparently dropping the 3dr pretty much paid for the Captur development. The Polo is not my thing; VW in general isn't my thing but they have their core customers and it will sell well. If we get anyone in looking at the Clio and one of the other competitors they are looking at is the Polo, they almost always buy the Polo, even if they are also looking at a Fiesta or 208 aswell, if the Polo is on the list then we have no chance, if it isn't on their list then we have a chance.

It's interesting you say that, a friend of ours had a 500 on a PCP that she was in negative equity on but needed to replace with a slightly larger car (with 5 seats), the only option under £200pcm with a reasonable spec and capable engine was a Polo - not a car I'd have thought she would go for (she had a Clio before the 500 and a 206 before that), the Polo is a 1.2TSi bluemotion in something like SE or Match spec and she is utterly delighted. I think it's the VW depreciation that made the difference to the monthly figure. I've found that many people looking at VW are a strange bunch, it's almost as if they are just looking elsewhere to convince themselves that the VW is the correct choice, as opposed to being open about what else is out there, if you know what I'm getting at. I had a mum and daughter in last year, they were looking at the Twingo, they had already looked at the Up! and Mii, they didn't like the Mii as the interior was too small, however they loved the Up!, I knew then that I had no chance. Before they had told me that they didn't like the Mii, I said something along the lines of "oh both the Mii and Up! are essentially the same car", the mums reply was "oh yes I know that but the Mii interior is smaller than the Up!'s"

How did VW manage that magic trick?

How did VW manage that magic trick?
The reflections off the VW badge play tricks with your mind to make you think its a bigger car.
Just imagine of there had been an Audi option, they'd have preferred that over the VW!

There's something about the perceived quality of the materials used in the car's interior that makes VW products feel better. Having driven Clio, Polo and Fiesta and sat in an Up! .... well, the Up! is smaller but the VW definitely feels classier that the rest; the 1.2TFSI engine is pretty good, and I suppose many people judge the car by how "nice" it feels to sit in. I can fully see why anyone who sits in a Polo and a Clio and a Fiesta would choose the VW, however it didn't fool me

I think what you'll find is that the visible plastics and trim have an extra, say, 50p spent on each individual part and although that might make the accountants want to cry the extra perceived quality simply allows them to add a few hundred quid to the price, comfortably outweighing the extra unit cost.
