This weeks car is a Toyota Camry. It’s spacious, brand new (1200 miles on it) and comfortable. I’ve driven 300 miles in it already and it still has about half a tank of fuel left which is good here. The seats are comfortable and look sporty, but aren’t heated, which considering the spec of the car, I find surprising. This is the first of the modern Camrys I’ve driven and it’s a decent drive. The thing I found interesting is the self driving function, this can be engaged and works better than the variable cruise control I had in December in the Mazda CX-5. There’s no jumpy performance to this one, but engaging the full self driving function allows you to let the car drive, and stay in the lane you’re in. It works pretty well when you e to stay in a lane but seems to favour following the passenger side of the road, so if the lane splits, it wants to leave the road.
Other than that, the car is pretty good and definitely one built for long journeys. The handling is decent and it has many good traits, although to use Bluetooth fully, you need to download an app and register it with Toyota. Great if you own the car, not so much if you are renting it. I plugged in and used CarPlay instead.

No surprise that the Camry has been almost invisible on UK roads since it was reintroduced. Sells in droves in the US, but its tough to sell a non-premium sedan here now. Maybe they should bring the TRD version to Europe that is available in the US, along with the V6. I'm sure that would make it sell like hot cakes.

Turns out it was a 2.5L 4 pot.
While driving out of San Francisco, I heard a noise over my right shoulder and in my mirror, saw a car careen across 6 lanes and plant into the central barrier, passenger side taking the full brunt of it. It literally missed me by the tiniest of margins. Had I been one lane over, it would have caught the back of the car and I’d probably not be typing this right now. I was doing 65-70 when it happened. The other car literally exploded all the windows on impact and the contents went everywhere. Hope the passengers were ok. The traffic all stopped behind the crash.
Californians just can’t drive on wet roads.

2 weeks later, got the same car as a rental again. Boss is driving now and he’s not afraid of making progress... We’ve just decelerated from about 90 mph to 40 very quickly and I can confirm that the brakes are very effective...

I rented a Camry in Australia in 2013. I'm assuming it was self driving as I can't remember a single thing about it.

I had a Camry hire car in the US years and years ago. It was very good at what it did. But left no lasting impression. Sounds like nothing has changed there, although it has obviously improved, as have all cars.

Well, I hope it's better than the Camry I had as a hire car from SFO in October 2018 - had to look that up, hard to believe it was about 2 1/2 years ago, seems more recent

Third week in a row getting a Camry. Different one this time, candy red in colour which suits it.
