Sensible advice. A TVR nearly ruined me. As much as I would have loved and could have afforded a 355, I'm glad I didn't.

I looked at a California years ago ,didn’t drive one though . Overall the press didn’t like it ,from what I saw you really don’t want the earlier ones ,the ‘30’ onwards are the ones to go for . Nowhere near as good dynamically as the other cars you list ,but has a sense of occasion the others don’t have .

The California T got a very different response from the press compared to the earlier car. That’s where I’m aiming. It is the sense of occasion that’s driving my interest. And a sense that if I don’t do it now I might be too old for it. My concern is that I’d end up with something I’d never dare drive anywhere.

How about a current R8? You’d get that sense of occasion, from the engine anyway and even the latest and nearly new Performance is ‘only’ £100k.

The rwd version seems to be getting good reviews too as it doesn't come with the performance exhaust and carbon ceramic brakes so is possibly much more road orientated. The downside is, however, that it's an Audi and no matter how good an Audi it is it will never be a Ferrari.

There are cars out there which are 'better' than the California, but they don't wear a Ferrari badge. I think this is more about the once in a lifetime opportunity to own a Ferrari than it is about being too sensible and so it needs to be done.

About the only thing that springs to my mind regarding the California is...... ..... that one of the first ones spotted in the UK bore the plate that's now on my Kuga

Over the last three years I’ve gone through a horrific divorce, family bereavements and I’ve navigated my business through the choppy waters of covid (this time last year we had circa 25 people delivering training and consultancy in far flung corners of the world, last March we saw a pipeline of £3.5M drop to £500k in three weeks. We sweated blood to redefine our offers and today we have 28 people doing the same job from home and we put 4% on our YoY revenue). To say I feel like I ‘deserve’ it is ridiculous, but I have got an increasing feeling of ‘f* it, do it whilst you can’

Cars like Ferrari's exist to give people with ambition something to aim for so I'm glad you've got there. It's also why I hate socialism.

Just do it. No point being the richest corpse in the graveyard. Good advice Jeff.....we’re still waiting for you to buy your 40th Ferrari and (50th?) M3! Yeah but I'm a tight arsed git with 5 kids Fair point though and guilty as charged. Justification is my main excuse for not spending money these days: I've got several thousand pounds worth of guitars I hardly get to touch; an NSR250 that remains unregistered; cover under 5,000 miles per annum across two cars; the Gorilla costs more to keep serviced than it does in petrol (no mean feat at 18mpg average over five years), all my holidays are spent outside the UK (or certainly not at home) and my weekends are full of kids. In seven years time I'll be working less / not caring much if I am and five years after that is it so given that's quite "young" these days I'll not be the richest corpse but I'll make some effort to be the laziest.

I thought people were going to flame you over the California as the press certainly had plenty to say about it (mainly as it wasn't a 458), but my personal view on it has always been that it looks great, its a modern Ferrari and they just don't seem to make bad cars. I've always harbored sort of secret crush feelings towards them. For the reasons stated, if you can, do it - I'm gutted I didn't act when you could get a decent 360 for £25-30k. Even if its ruinous to run, you owned and enjoyed a Ferrari. Worth a go surely? The 156GTA cost me a fortune to make right/run (for the sort of car it was) and I regret not a second of it.
For the money, there are legions of other contenders as I'm sure you are aware. GT3's, Boxster GTS, R8 V10's, V12 Vantages, Early McLarens (which always appeal to me as they seem to have such great ride quality for UK roads).
But they are not Ferraris. Ferraris are different, and one day I hope to run one ruinously myself :-) Go for it - and keep us informed!!!

Ooh, I seem to have come over all unnecessary...! I'll have to retire with my smelling salts and some vigorous fanning...

Back on topic, I can completely see the appeal of a California T and I assure you it has nothing to do with the smelling salts!
