I’m on a weekly call with people in the semiconductor industry and a big part of the discussion over the past few months is traditional car makers.
Honda, VW, Ford and Nissan have all had to cut back on their production, not because of lack of customers, but because of lack of components.
Apparently the chip manufacturers aren’t focusing on the car industry because the margins are much smaller and the tech is older, so they’ve less incentive to build for them. The car companies have been single sourcing a lot of their components which has made things more difficult for them too.
The other things is the higher end manufacturers are reducing the amount of processors in their newer builds, going from hundreds of processors to dozens and apparently the aim is to have a single controller unit that makes all the decisions for the car in the future. They expect the regular companies to be about 5 years behind companies like Mercedes here.
Interesting that this is what’s happening in the industry.
The EV market isn’t affected as much as it uses newer tech that’s more readily available.

Should only affect the big boys though. We've had no issue with our electronics suppliers - it does help that our car only has 2 control units, both of which are uncomplicated in the grand scheme of things, especially when compared to the control units found in superminis, let alone waft tanks.

It's hardly surprising there is a shortage of microchips at the moment when so many are being injected into people's arms.

They'll have to go old school and go back to valves and transistors.

These chips, how on earth do I make sure mine are updated with the newest software and drivers for connectivity?

These chips, how on earth do I make sure mine are updated with the newest software and drivers for connectivity? Buy the frozen packet with the longest "best before" date......
