I can't help but feel that when manufacturers do things like this, that they're running out of original ideas. At least it doesn't look quite so much like an upturned skip as the original and they've solved the issue of exorthermic turbo engines by going electric, but will it still have the snappy lift off oversteer issues that had you wondering whether you would end your drive back on your drive or in the back of an ambulance after being pulled from a field, upside down and possibly on fire?

I like it. Nice clean lines and an attractiveness similar to a Peugeot 205. Given the range that Renault get out of the smaller Zoe and if priced correctly, this could be a real winner. If they try to go up against VW ID in the pricing department, it will just be another lacklustre Renault.

That does look good.
I don’t get the issue too much with revivals . Plenty of successes out there .Take the Fiat 500. I’d never own one, but hugely successful , looks good (for what it is) .

Although we do own a Fiat 500 and it's great. It's one of those machines which isn't objectively great but which subjectively somehow manages to be many times more than the sum of its parts. It's just got lots of feel-good factor for something so humble, and it's fun to drive even if it's not necessarily good to drive.

That looks fabulous but unfortunately I can't see the production version looking anything like it

Plus "Revive the Five" as a phrase as something of the "Bring out the Gimp" about it...

Clearly the French need more Renault 5s in case civil unrest increases: first thing you ever saw in a Paris riot was a 5 on its side or roof and on fire. They've run out!

And here that was always a GT Turbo, with a spotty oik skulking nearby, waiting for the dibble to arrive.

Way, way back in time, one of my staff had a R5 GT Turbo as his company car. Very tax efficient as it was only 1400cc and BIK was cc based in them days. When he needed something bigger to shift stuff (quite often as he was doing up a house) we'd swap and he'd take my Granada "motorised sofa" and I'd get the R5 for the weekend. Great fun. A real hooligan car.
But when I had the opportunity to sit in and drive a basic R5 I was utterly underwhelmed. So I hope the EV is more Turbo nutter bastard and less cheap crappy shit.

I have fond memories of a friend's 990cc Renault 5 getting to (shall we say) a very round speed on a downhill stretch of M9 dual carriageway. The last few mph I thought it was going to explode and then suddenly everything reached a harmony with no more vibration and the engine screaming but silky smooth. Another friend had a 5 turbo that had been breathed on and whilst very quick for a relatively small power band it was really difficult changing gears: every time you put the clutch in and took your foot off the accelerator the revs would suddenly increase as if there was some boost that was a bit late to the party. Very odd but at the time about the fastest thing around our way.

I knew 3 people who owned R5 GT Turbos. One went through 6 turbos, the other put it on its roof (predictably) and the third one chewed through headgaskets like they were Tic Tacs.
The last one was owned when I had my 205 and there was no comparison. On the days the R5 actually worked, it was no match for the 205 on the twisties.

My mum had a first generation mid blue one with white 'go faster' stripes on the side (they weren't stripes, they were white blocks that increased in size iirc) and she absolutely loved it.
I like the look of the concept.

I like the look of the concept too. Good job, Renault. I don't have any first-hand memories of Renault 5s. I must have been a passenger in one at some point but I genuinely cannot remember the experience.

R5 GT Turbos have a bad rep from those in my year and the year above at school as the year after we left school one popular chap from the year above was killed when he went out of the back window of one on the A3 at Cobham. Grim as the other 4 occupants were all old boys. Everyone in the group and wider circle of friends drove far more sensibly for years after.

Nice concept but we’ve been here before. The most recent Twingo was meant to channel the R5 and it simply didn’t register with buyers. If they’re going to go this route I suspect they’ll need to find something more cute from the back-catalogue.

Other than the giant RENAULT script on the bumper, I quite like the looks of that actually. Will this be called Le Car Electrique in America?

Will this be called Le Car Electrique in America? Je ne sais pas... and it doesn't much look like the original 5 to me
