My job has meant I’ve been in and have rented a lot of cars in the last few years, but especially in the last year. The vast majority of these has been in California and I’ve noticed a few trends.
1: All the car companies use established brands for advertising the different classes. Fiesta or similar, Focus or similar, Jetta or similar and so on. I have not rented any of these cars in a long time despite getting compact, standard or full size cars.
2: Every rental company I’ve used- Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Budget- use the same brands. Nissan, Kia and Hyundai as their day to day cars. I’ve not had a Ford in months and had an Audi early last year, but that’s all.
3: Despite deep cleaning, I’ve found that 1 in every 3 cars stinks of weed. This is across all rental companies. Since legalisation, people don’t seem to care about smoking weed in rental cars. A colleague has started refusing cars that smell of it and I’m going to do the same. From now on.
4: Before I got the X5 last year, I used to prefer driving the rental cars that I had. Now, I look forward to getting my own car back. This is a good thing.

Don't most rental companies worldwide quote some popular model or similar? I guess they get in whatever they can get at the biggest fleet discount, with the best possible resale afterwards, including some aspect of reliability, warranty, etc.
I would think the more customers start to refuse cars that small of cannabis, then maybe rental companies will start retaining deposits more often when cars are returned. I certainly wouldn't take one if stunk like that.

Only cars I've hired recently have been in Ireland - never get anything like the car I booked - last time a Fiesta changed into a Sandero.

No major complaints with the last car I hired in the California, back at the end of 2019 as you'll see below. I know it would be different with a company/work rental as lower down the categories it does get a bit bland, but I had an Escalade booked for our cancelled summer holiday, not my taste but it has a V8 petrol engine, some luxury and enough space for 5 of us and all the luggage. I couldn't rent something from Nissan/Kia/Hyundai etc if I was in the US, it has always had to be something American (not just built there). That and pressure from the first Mrs Martin was how I ended up being in a Hummer many years ago.

^ If you recall, on my one and only (so far) work trip to the USA just over a couple of years ago, I wanted to get an american car but the choice was IIRC Toyota, Kia or Hyundai. Nothing from any of the USA marques was on offer, hence I took a Camry as it wasn't available in the UK at that time (and what a disappointment it was).
I still dream of one day being able to return to the west coast and hiring a "proper" Mustang, but at the moment, even getting into the USA as a tourist is still a dream :-(

I'd agree that US rental cars have become a bit bland in the business market. Back in the 1990's and early 2000's I used to get quite a lot of interesting stuff. A V8 Thunderbird being one odd-ball example. Hardly a great car, but nicely American. And a big Genesis saloon that we never got in the UK. I had Hertz Gold latterly and that meant it was easy to change car if you really didn't want what had been assigned. But that usually meant a change from dull to slightly less dull. I'm shocked you know what weed smells like. Disgraceful.

I'm shocked you know what weed smells like. Disgraceful. It’s legally being grown all over California now, there’s a warehouse across the street from my job that stinks at harvest time which is every 2 months or so. I don’t partake myself, my poison is the occasional bourbon/whiskey/whisky depending on the mood 😉

I hate the smell off the stuff. Foul-smelling.
