I am surprised that they are making a 5GT replacement. It certainly wasn't a great UK success so I presume there must be thousands on the road in other markets to make it worthwhile. It looks marginally better than the old one but we are talking degrees of ugliness here.

Looks like an A5 Sportback in profile.

I think they're consolidating their line-up, such that these specialist models get even numbers, and odd numbers are reserved for 'regular' cars. Probably the next to go is the 3GT following this current generation.
I think the 5GT and this looks alright although I'm not a big fan. I do know of people who like them though because they're huge inside and quite practical. It's the closest thing you can get to a large BMW MPV.

The 6 Series as we know it will come to an end. The 8 series will be the high end coupe and the 6 Series badge will be on the 5 Series GT replacement.

I've just picked up an email from my dad about the new 6GT. His car was in for a service and he had a good look around the new 5 Series Touring, but came to the same conclusion I did (it's not that different to the old model). He mentioned the new 6GT and by the time he'd got home they'd emailed him a video and price list.
It looks a lot better than the 5GT. I've not had chance to compare prices, but it's a lot better equipped than the 5 Series as standard (panoramic roof, icon LEDs, memory seats, folding mirrors, reversing camera etc).

Are we going to see a new 6GC and 6 coupe or are they finished at the end of this model line?

It sounds like there may be at least one more of each, but I'm not 100% sure.
Just had a look at the pricing, a 630d M Sport is £5,000 more than a 530d Touring. That's a lot, but the spec difference is worth £4,000, the other £1,000 must be for the 6 badge.

Looks like an A5 Sportback in profile. That's a very unkind thing to say about an A5 Sportback!
I think it is gopping. The proportions simply don't work. Somebody in BMW's design team is blind.

I’ve seen a few on transporters now and it looks quite a bit better than it does in pictures, but not enough for me to want one.
My Dad likes it and based on our conversation last night, I strongly suspect he’ll be ordering one this week to replace his F11 525d which he’s had for 6 years / just under 40,000 miles. His local dealer brought one round so he could try it in the garage / have a test drive, he really liked it. Apparently, even in M Sport trim on 20” wheels, it’s quite a bit more comfortable than his current car (which has 19” wheels and SE suspension) and after a couple of estate he likes the idea of something different and a saloon isn’t practical enough. He prefers the M Sport, which has a generous level of std equipment (metallic paint, rear self levelling air suspension, panoramic roof, Professional Nav, sensatec dash, memory seats etc), and will be adding a few options, such as comfort seats, 4 zone climate, rear heated seats, wood trim, parking assistant plus and electric tow bar. I’ve tried to persuade him to go sunblinds rather than sun protection glass....
Not my choice, but he is in his 70s now and has different requirements to me, plus it could be an awful lot worse!

for Christ's sake, give it a fucking rear wiper. I am pissed off with manufacturers making this omission just for the sake of style. Try seeing out the back of that with a dusting of snow or dried on rain/grime. I know there are plenty of water repellents on the market but for such a large screen that desperately needs a wiper. What about at low speeds where RainX (and similar) aren't as effective?

Oh I know - the GC doesn't have a rear wiper and I do find it irritating.

I was right. He’s ordered a 630d M Sport in bluestone with an Ivory White/Black interior, burled walnut trim and a couple of other options.
He saved an extra £2,600 thanks to the info I provided, so ended up about £200 over the broker price, but he’s got a really good relationship with the dealer and they didn’t make him go for finance. He’s separated the trade in and new car so the 525d goes in on the 2nd January, as they’re off to Australia for 3 months and he should get the new car in March when they get back. The dealer has promised to bridge the gap if the car is late.
He was concerned about the anti diesel situation and doesn’t do a huge amount of miles, so was originally talking about a 640i, but he tried a 540i and was a bit underwhelmed.
Apparently this will be his last new car, but he said that last time......

If the 630D goes half as well as the 530D courtesy car I had a couple of months ago, he will be more than happy.
